Beaches Backpacker Resort is not exactly located on the waterfront as it's name suggests, but it's close to the Hervey Bay beach and shops. It's a long way from the bus station, so don't think of getting there on foot. Fortunately they have a pick up and drop off service when you arrive and depart. But you must ring ahead to give them the time. And you can jump in other days for a lift as well.
The accommodations are nice, arranged in separate sheds grouped around a pool, kitchen, and bar/dining hall. The rooms have various combinations of beds from four single beds to four bunk beds. There's plenty of room to enter in and leave your luggage. Everyone gets a key so you can feel relatively secure. They provide meals in the dining hall three times a day and the prices are fairly reasonable. Alternatively there are lots of good places nearby. The kitchen is adequate, you have to pay a deposit on the cutlery and crockery which is returned if you also return your things.
Hervey Bay is pleasant, but not as exciting in itself as Noosa or Cairns for example. That's why Beaches offers the self-drive 4wd tour of Fraser Island. People seem to stay purely for this reason. The tours are fantastic opportunity to see the wildlife and environment of Fraser, which is really beautiful with lakes, beaches, and rainforest.
