The Hostelz.com Review
Harbour Grange Backpackers / Whitby Backpackers' Nordic owner, Birgitta, is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. She really makes an effort to get to know her guests and even though we arrived a little late she showed no sign of annoyance. The facilities are simple but completely adequate and the location perfect for exploring Whitby.
The Location
Harbour Grange is located right on the waterfront and not far from the main bridge crossing to the centre of Whitby. We had some trouble finding it, really because the a guidebook's map of Whitby isn't complete and cuts it off. Plus they are also on a little bit of a side street off the main road. Still once you're there, it's handy for getting around up to the old Abbey, into the modern part of town, to the bus/train station, and the beach.
Whitby itself is a gorgeous place and, of the places you could go on the Yorkshire coast, highly recommended. There are some great coastal walks -- you could day trip along the North Yorkshire Railway or simply enjoy the town, which includes a Captain Cook museum and a fabulous riverfront, Dracula-related stores, and old English-style amusement areas.
Rooms and Bathrooms
All the bedrooms are on the ground floor, which is handy -- the owners live upstairs. There are five rooms that sleep twenty-four people total, so they don't pack it in. The rooms -- all with bunk beds -- sleep two, four, six, and eight. You can bring your own sleeping bag or pay extra to hire sheets.
The bathrooms are at the other end of the building -- handy to keep noise down but also a long walk in the night! They are very clean, although the showers get a bit wet from spray and you couldn't change inside the shower. But there's a male and female option, so at least you have privacy.
Common Spaces
Harbour Grange is completely self-catering -- they have an excellent kitchen and an area for sitting down. There's also a small lounge with a television. They do have a curfew at 11:30 p.m. and request quiet at midnight, which perhaps some travelers won't appreciate but we quite liked it. It's nice to return to the hostel at night and be able to sleep soundly.
Summary
Harbour Grange doesn't get too busy, so it feels more like your own home base and there's no lockout during the day. You are given your own keys to come as you like and can lock your own door. They do get busy from time to time, but since the YHA renovated a nearby backpackers, this one has had less clientele, however you probably won't get such a good host up there, plus down on the River Esk you are right near the action in town.
