HI - Point Reyes, a wheelchair-accessible hostel, is situated in an very green environment relatively far away from Point Reyes. It is very useful to have a car when going to the hostel because there is no public bus service going to the hostel. If you have a car and a good map it takes you about fifteen minutes from Point Reyes to go to the hostel. It's too far to go there on foot. If you can't find it, ask the old man in the only petrol station in Point Reyes -- he is very gifted in directing you to the hostel.
It's a relatively small hostel with only two rooms -- one for men, the other one for women. There aren't any shared dorms. In each room there are ten beds, but no real wardrobes. Next to the women's dorm you can find a bathroom with two showers and two toilets (only for women). The men also have a separate bathroom with two showers and two toilets right across the hall.
The hostel has an area with sofas and a relatively huge kitchen for everybody's use. The kitchen is fully equipped with a stove and dishes. There is a separate little dinning room with two wooden tables and benches. They also have a little veranda to sit on during warmer months. It is not a super modern hostel, but it's clean.
If you are guest in this hostel you should be prepared to help the staff with its work (including separating and bringing away the rubbish). The hostel is closed from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for cleaning. Office hours are from 7:30 to 10 a.m. and 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. During this time you aren't allowed to stay in the hostel. Also, alcohol is not allowed in the hostel.
From the youth hostel it takes you about twenty minutes to go to the Point Reyes Lighthouse, where in the winter months you can watch grey whales passing by. The location of the hostel is ideal if you like nature and hiking, and if you are lucky you can see elks.
