The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Brownie's Hostel is not a wilderness hostel, as there is electricity and plumbing. Dorm rooms contain eight beds, the community showers/restrooms function well but feel a little rundown, and a common room and full kitchen with electric stove and microwave round things out. The front porch balcony facing west to watch sunsets is probably the hostel's best feature.

Joe is a most helpful host, and is always willing to answer most any question about the hostel, town, or park. The hostel itself has a somewhat woodsy feel, but not quite on the level of other wilderness hostels, and it's difficult to pinpoint why.

Located just three blocks from the Amtrak depot, this hostel couldn't be better situated for the backpacker coming to Glacier National Park sans vehicle. Shuttle services can get these travelers to St. Mary's Lake (pictured) and the park's trailheads to let the real fun begin. And then there's always a hot shower and a real bed waiting at Brownie's! There are a couple of bars and casinos in East Glacier Park for some nightlife -- and there's always the random fireworks blast as the 4th of July nears.

If you're coming to Glacier to see glaciers, this is the hostel for you -- it is nearest to the park entrances with access to most of the remaining glaciers. Scientists anticipate they will be gone by the end of the century -- what in the world are you sitting around waiting for?

4  Great Place for a Rest Just loved Brownie's! My first experience at a hostel. Liked it so well went back for a second night. Met some very nice & friendly young people and other travelers. Rooms were adequate and shower did the job. Workers in the bakery very friendly and accommodating. Plan to go back in 2012. Made me want to get a job in the bakery and live in E Glacier.  , USA ()
4  Ggood place to stay for cheap. needs a maintence man walls are thin but i don't hear so well anyway. price is very good compared to anything else. only complaint i had was the inside latch on the room door. couldn't have been a big deal as i just made reservations for this year.  , usa ()
4  It worked out for us. Our private room, was big enough for the two of us, and it had a window for fresh air. The room was clean and adequately furnished. The bathroom/shower was at the end of the hall, it was always clean, and had shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, razors. It could get tight if more than two people were using at the same time. On the negative, the walls are thin, so you can hear people talking and walking outside of your room. Also, a couple of neighborhood dogs would bark late at night. On the positive, you can walk downstairs into the store/bakery and get supplies, this was convenient, plus they had two rental internet pc stations. They have espresso, so get a coffee drink, grab a cinnamon roll and enjoy. You can rent a car across the street. It's six blocks away from the Amtrak Station and East Glacier Lodge, the best Lodge in my opinion. We paid $28 a night, and stayed a week. Very good value in our opinion. It was our first hostel experience.  , Minnesota, USA ()
3  Good other than the very thin walls. The hostel dorms are fairly crowded and the mattresses somewhat lumpy. The biggest issue are the thin walls, definitely the thinnest of any place I've stayed. Otherwise, this is a great hostel. The staff are friendly, and despite looking worn it is clean throughout.  , Canada ()
5  Best cheap accommodation available near Glacier Park Brownies is great. It's certainly not the fanciest hostel, like some of the ones in Europe, but it's great for an American hostel, and for cheap nights near Glacier it can't be beat. It has standard hostel amenities: showers, bunks, a kitchen, common room, etc. It also has an awesome bakery downstairs, as well as a convenience store section, which is indeed very convenient. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and active in local outdoor activities. There's also free Wi-Fi, which comes and goes (it's satellite based), but is free and fast when it works. I don't really know what else you could want out of a hostel. Sure, it's not a hotel. It can be loud, people play guitar on the porch, the kitchen isn't spotless, and the floors creak. But it's a hostel! As a side note, we did stay at a few other places in East Glacier, and Brownies blew them all away.  , USA ()
3  Lacks customer service, walls paper thin Checked in for one night. The hostel check in is in their bakery, which requires a minimum $6 charge to use a credit/debit card. It is also where you return your dirty sheet and towels to girl or clerk behind food counter. yuck. Walls are paper thin, we could hear all the late night chatter of our neighbors, my wife said the ladies room was cramped, mens room shower mats were not clean. They claimed there was free coffee in hostel. One worker brought some up from bakery when i asked, others did not know about it. someone spit all over our car window while parked in lot. yuck. there were cute dogs outside hostel, great place for soup next door. Wireless did not work in our room. Room did not have a chair and limited furnishings.  , USA ()
5  Excellent. Very convenient and accommodating. Our stay was excellent! We had nine adults and fifteen teenagers and they accommodated all of us. Great little bakery/store downstairs and a nice diner next door. It made our trip go very easy staying there as we got ready for the park.  , USA ()
5  The best hostel I've ever stayed in! I have stayed in hostels all over North America and Europe, and this is the best hostel I've ever stayed in! It is a different experience, staying in an old log cabin style building. the store and bakery downstairs was wonderful. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Of course the location is beautiful, and the staff helped me book a tour into the park. My beautiful private room had an extremely comfortable double bed with a handmade quilt. The neighbors were friendly, as were the local dogs. The food in the restaurant was phenomenal.  , USA ()
5  I've stayed at Brownie's for three years in a row and just love the place. It's a wonderful location for arriving by Amtrak and you can get around the park easily without a car using the shuttle service or hitchhiking. Wonderful clean community kitchen and a good grocery store right downstairs. Enjoy the coffee and the fresh baked goods from the bakery. Place to eat next door. Internet is available and my cell phone worked for the first time last summer (2006). I look forward to going back this summer.  , USA ()
4  This hostel sits on top of a convenience/bakery store, so if you wanted to you could pick up your groceries in the daytime. The male dorm consisted of four metal bunk beds and there were wooden lockers to store your stuff. The beds came with big comforters so you didn't feel the cold nights. It's a convenient location to go out and explore Glacier National Park/Waterton Park from. My only complaint is that I could not get any cell phone reception while in the area.  ()
2  This is a really dark, weird hostel. The walls are PAPER thin, so we could hear every word of the couple next to us. There is a weird grocery store downstairs . . . the whole thing just seems kind of not kept up very well. I would suggest finding somewhere else to stay if possible.  ()
5  Nice hostel, good location, quiet, clean. Downstairs is a convenient store and small bakery. It's worth waiting for the fresh baked cinnamon rolls in the morning!  ()
