The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Nantucket Hostel is a beautiful historic building, bordered by salt marshes and sand dunes, with the gorgeous and wild Surfside Beach directly across the street. This hostel is a little gem on the trendy island of Nantucket.

The Location

This hostel is three-and-a-half miles from downtown and the ferry landing. There is a bus that runs until 6 in the evening (and after September 1st not at all) that stops a block away from the hostel, and there is another bus that runs until 11 at night but stops a mile away. Bring a flashlight! This island is wonderful for bike riding -- the bike rental service will even deliver your bike to the hostel for you.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms here are very clean, but the bathrooms could use a little more attention. Although thoroughly cleaned once a day, twice a day would make a big difference. They also have two outdoor showers, which is really helpful to rinse off all that beach sand. Lockers are available, but they are tiny.

Common Spaces

This hostel offers a small but cozy sitting area complete with computer, TV, and lots of books (current novels as well as local interest). The dining room is the biggest space with two long tables -- this is where people seem to congregate, lingering over meals to chat. The kitchen is lovely and well equipped but a little too narrow, so during peak meal times there's lots of bumping into fellow chefs. Free coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are available throughout the day.

Summary

This summer-only hostel is well worth visiting. The staff are pleasant and helpful and the location is beautiful.

5  Good call We just got back from a three-day stay and had a great time. The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast/kitchen situation was a lot better than I've had at other hostels. (Things weren't sticky, people did their dishes, good coffee.) You can come and go twenty-four hours/day, but the dorm was quiet after 10 p.m. The location is incredible. To be that close to an awesome beach for $30/night is pretty sweet. We brought our bikes over on the ferry and it was a relatively painless ride to town, nice bike paths.  , USA ()
3  Advantages: hostel located across the street from the beach, friendly staff. Disadvantages: bad public transit access. The hostel is located about three miles from Nantucket town. The last bus to Surfside beach from town departs at about 5:30p, so if you want to spend more time in town or have dinner there, you need to take a different bus. This alternate bus drops you off farther away from the hostel; it's about a 30 min. walk from the bus stop. I'd recommend renting a bike. While the dorm room and kitchen were clean, the men's bathroom was not very clean, relative to most other hostels. The bathrooms need to be cleaned more frequently. small kitchen. lockout during the daytime.  ()
4  I've stayed in hostels all over the world, and this is one of my favorites. If possible, I'd give it 4.5 stars, because it is very good. The only things not excellent about it are the lockout, its distance from town, and the cramped kitchen facilities. However, the view, its being right on the beach, the comfortable beds, the EXCELLENT staff, and the clean and hospitable facilities more than made up for this.  ()
1  I was there in July 2003 and it was dirty dirty dirty. The "back dorm" room was fine. The beds were fine and the linens seemed clean enough, but the men's bathroom and showers were NASTY. A man has to take a dump so he does. But i took one nasty shower, and ended up using the public showers in town (free - for the boat folk). The guy who ran the place was quite nice, but I'm not sure he did anything during the "lock out" period other than go to the beach. I mean... what is a lock out for other than cleaning?!  ()
5  One of the finest hostels in the nation! It a a very clean establishment with a nice sitting room and equipped kitchen. Beautiful Surfside beach is just a few steps away. The staff members are attentive and helpful! Love it!  ()
4  A bit far out of town but set in a beautiful location. The staff are very friendly and all the amenities are more than adequate.  ()
