The Hostelz.com Review
The Embassie Independent Hostel is a grand, old building just out of town and located opposite a nice, small park. It is a big hostel but it still retains a friendly atmosphere, as most likely as soon as you get in the door you will be shown a seat and given a with a cup of tea!

As there are no keys for this hostel, you have to ring the doorbell each time you go out and then wait for the staff to come and open the door (which can at times be annoying). The kitchen is old-fashioned, like most of the hostel, and tea, coffee, and toast are available for free. The dorms are fairly cramped and usually pretty full, and whilst there are no actual lockers, you can store your bag under the beds and give your precious valuables to reception to lock in the safe. Unfortunately there are no locks on the room doors which doesn't stop forgetful/drunk people wandering in!

The lounge/common room is massive and has a TV, DVD player and lots of videos and books to keep you from getting bored. There is also a common room with a pool table downstairs, and another kitchen and laundry. The bathrooms are suprisingly modern in contrast and are separated into Girls/Boys.

The staff are mostly young and seem to also be travellers, and have lots of feedback and info about the area. In such a big hostel you are bound to meet fellow travellers and be able to have a chat. The Embassie has a really laid-back (sometimes vague!) attitude and if this suits you, you are sure to have a great time here.

I recently stayed at the Embassie Hostel. I was really not looking forward to staying there but had no choice -- however I was pleasantly surprised. The staff are friendly, the rooms are clean, you can come and go as you like, it's about a fifteen- to twenty-minute walk from the city centre, there is a basement room which is a good place to relax, watch tv or play pool at the end of the day, and you are sure to meet some interesting people. There is a very lively atmosphere during the evenings -- so if you want peace and quiet maybe you should go elsewhere (rather than constantly complaining like the woman I had the misfortune of sharing a room with). The only problem I had was the fact that it was near impossible to get into the bathroom to have a shower or even brush your teeth -- be prepared to wait in line! If I ever go back to Liverpool, Embassie will be my first choice for accommodation.

If you look for cheap accommodation and you expect a five-star hotel, go somewhere else! We were made very welcome, and had a good bed to sleep in, had plenty of tea, toast, and jam and could talk with people from all over the world. We sang a few songs, talked about shanties (work songs from the seven seas). It's easy to have comments about towels lying on the floor in the bathrooms, the shower was hot enough, and I always take my own towels with me, walk on slippers and brought my own sleeping bag liner. the sheets were clean though. On the whole -- good place to stay for people who like it unpolished.

Really Poor. Great welcome from the owner, then things went down from there. only three showers for fifty backpackers. staff made no effort to move the drunks along in the corridor, yelling and screaming at 4 a.m. but worst of all we suffered a severe case of bedbugs. when we informed the staff, they did nothing about it. we asked for the owner/ manager to at least contact us, Nothing. This place is a joke of a hostel! Stay away from Embassie Hostel.

I have stayed at the Embassie many times, It is a wonderful place. The Embassie is a beautiful georgian house. It is clean, although rustic, not filled with plastic and mdf. I love it and have been twelve times over the past ten years, its a home away from home.

I stayed here in July of 2005.. I was backpacking for 3 months, and while this for sure wasnt the cleanest or the swankiest hostel I stayed in (nor was it the worst), it was by far my favorite. The staff was unbelievably friendly, as were all the other guests. Everyone hung out together, I was never at a loss for something to do or someone to do it with. By the time I left, this place felt like home & I was sad to go. The first night I was there I got in late and without a reservation.. the staff set up a bed for me in the common room without acting like it was the least bit of trouble for them, and then kicked out everyone who was there to the other common room in the basement. It was an easy walk from the hostel to the center of the downtown (10 minutes) Next time I am in Liverpool I will definitely be staying here again!!

One of the worst hostels I have ever had the misfortune of staying in, very unfriendly staff, miles away from the center of town. When I stayed there it was mostly full of long term guests who had the run of the place and were very cliquey. The staff were rude, it just didn't have a friendly vibe, also the place was filthy, the showers sucked and I swear it was rat infested, you could hear them at night. Very much an old-school hostel where the owners believe guests should rough it. In this day and age that style doesn't cut it. This is one to keep well clear of.

This is the best hostel ever! The place isn't perfect but the atmosphere is so friendly that you just forget about little imperfections. This is the right place to be if you want to meet new people and talk about everything with people from all around the world, hear Andy's endless speeches, and listen to Kevin's stories. This is a great place!

We stayed in this hostel for two nights. On the whole the facilities are what you would expect from a hostel; basic and cheap. The bathrooms were just reasonable and the landing/stairs are liabilities waiting to happen. Staff; they are rude and have no organization skills; and all your personal details are free to be seen by anyone. If you want to stay somewhere where you are treated like a criminal and discussed by other residents; are accused of non payment at 4 in the morning when you come in, then this is the place for you! The staff are experts in losing cheques and post; enjoy ringing former residents and terrorizing them for money (which they have already had) and have no communication abilities. An added extra is finding a male member of staff next to your bed at 7 in the morning collecting cups! Nice of him to knock and feel free to walk into a room of sleeping women with all their belongings in there. Can't comment on the facilities as no one told us about them; what downstairs basement?

This place is an absolute hellhole. It smells of cat wee and the walls in the bedrooms had hand marks (of what I didn't want to find out) all over the crumbling walls! To top off our two-night stay we were accused of not paying — which we did in advance — and harassed by the staff every time we came in. The alleged check that "had not been received" was cashed just two days later after we gave the friendly owner our credit card details!!! We had men walking into our all-girls room at all times of the day/night, claiming to be looking for cups and whatever else they could think of! I would rather sleep in the park across the road then sleep in this very unwelcoming, filthy, thieving "friendly" hostel again!

It's a great place to stay; I recommend it to anyone. I've been there a few times and every time is the same — chilled out atmosphere with great people to have conversations with.

I am about to return for my third stay at the Embassie!!! I can honestly say that the warmth of welcome from the Kevins and staff is better than anywhere I have ever been before. I cannot imagine a better place to spend a few days. Fellow travelers, company, stories shared over a drink or a coffee, sing-a-longs, joke-telling sessions (all long into the night) — the list is endless. The Embassie has provided me with a home away from home and no shortage of stories when I get back home! I recommend it thoroughly. If you are in Liverpool and stay anywhere else, you are clearly mad!!!

We had such a nice time in this hostel! You don't need to go out, the party is there! I had a feeling of one big family spending a great time there. So: go there!

I stayed a weekend at the Embassie. It was a great time! I liked the staff a lot — they were a lot of fun! I liked the fact that you could get tea and toast at any time of the day. The reason for me not giving it the extra star is that there were mice in the room when I stayed. If you don't mind them you're fine, but if you do make sure to get a top bunk! Everything else about Embassie is great — Liverpool rocks!

I stayed at the Embassie in August, 2003, during Beatlesweek. The staff was so friendly, and I got to know lots of wonderful people there. I really recommend staying there. It's very simple, and not so exclusive, but who needs that? I will definitely live there in August, when I will return to the great city of Liverpool.

This hostel felt like more of a hippie commune than a hostel. The staff was very welcoming, and it was a joy to hang around. The TV room has movies to watch, and there's a pool table downstairs with the kitchen. It's a very cool place to stay. It is a bit far from the city center, about a 15 or 20 minute walk. But everyone knows the hostel, and it is very easy to find.
