Quiet and comfortable, low cleaning standards
We stayed a couple of days in January, while it was really cold and rainy. Luckily we had a heater in the room which worked quite well, the kitchen and everywhere else was quite cold. The hostel only had a few guests and we found it very quiet and quite comfortable. They offer free coffee and tea and the hostel is quite close to the naked bus station. One concern was, that there is no hot water at night, so you cannot shower if you happen to come home late. The other one was, that they do not change the sheets between guests and sometimes not even the pillowcases, which is actually not acceptable from a hygienic point of view.

Appearances are very deceptive.
My group and I, after looking for a place in Dunedin for the night came across what we thought was this charming place online. The location, description and rates were all very appealing. Unfortunately this wasn't to be the case. The place is FREEZING, it's safe to say that it is warmer outside than inside. There was a heater in the room that had an auto cut-out switch that kicked in every half hour. The kitchen is grotty, with no teatowels to clean your dishes (there was one that was so filthy I'm surprised it didn't crawl away by itself), and there was little or no cooking utensils. The beds (if that's what you want to call them) are flat, uncomfortable pieces of padding that come with the flimsiest of duvets. Also, the bedding was dirty. My pillowcase had definitely seen more than it's fair share of drool stains. I refused to shower here as the shower rooms were beyond disgusting. To be honest I don't even think the owners or cleaners come up this far (we stayed on the second floor). The "free wifi" is limited to the icy reception lounge and a tiny "internet room" which could easily double up as a walk in freezer. Honestly, this place is a joke. Imagine "Fawlty Towers" and magnify the ridiculousness of that tenfold. You could see how in the past that this place would've been a good hostel to stay at (previously owned by YHA), but this isn't the case now. If you want a prime example of seeing a hostel being driven straight into the ground, then stay here at this dump.

Enjoyable, Nice setting, reasonable rates, nice staff
Charming building, esp the top floor. The rooms were fine -- I was in a 4-bed dorm room -- and rates were reasonable. There are some hostels closer to the Octagon, but this was a fine walk. I had a car and there was street parking and a few spaces in the hostel lot. Kitchen and bathroom facilities were fine, and there are laundry machines and clotheslines. There's a piano (a bit out of tune) and fine internet connection in some common areas. Michael, the man who runs the place was always nice, helpful and reasonable.

Convenient, clean, light and airy
Very good place to stay, for all the right reasons. Pleasant staff, decent kitchen, good location, excellent dorm room -- lots of light and airy. Comfy beds. Only less than excellent point was few power points around. Doable, but took a bit of arranging/sharing. I definitely would stay there again.

Wonderful place to stay and value for money!
One of the best backpacker ever stay in New Zealand. Beautiful building with a good history. Very friendly staffs and clean big comfortable rooms too. Great free tea and coffee + Wifi!! They have a fantastic roof top garden overlooking the harbour and city. Located just behind the main Naked bus station around the corner of the famous New Zealand BELL Tea building. Will definitely recommend it to everyone who is going to Dunedin. 100% good!
