This is a great place to stay. It has spotlessly clean, well-priced rooms and very clean ablution areas. It also has internet access at $2 for 15 minutes, a roomy lounge area with board games and a Contessa fireplace. There is a kitchen with the usual amenities – ovens, toaster, microwave, fridge complete with marker pen for labelling your food, and jugs, as well as cutlery and crockery.
If you have a sleeping bag then it may be worth bringing it as linen is an extra $2 per person (note that rooms with en-suites have linen included). The backpackers is a member of BBH http://www.bbh.co.nz/, and the beds are discounted if you are a member of BBH. Membership is probably worth getting if you are staying in 5 or more hostels during your stay in New Zealand.
A word on Lake Tekapo – it can get freezing, after all, the lake is fed by snowy mountains, so do bring warm clothes. The hostel itself is 300 metres from the Visitors Centre on State Highway 8 and clearly sign-posted. Thoroughly recommended.
