The Hostelz.com Review
The Stanford House hostel is an old farmhouse located in the woods of the Cuyahoga Valley National Forest. There is no public transportation to the hostel, so one can only get there by automobile. The rural setting makes for a splendid environment, with deep woods behind the hostel. There are park trails that run next to the hostel, so it is easy to access the wonderful trails of the National Forest.

Fortunately or unfortunately, the hostel is located only several miles from an interstate highway. This makes for easy access to the hostel, but this means it is possible to hear the faint sounds of a busy highway off in the distance when the weather is amiable to the travel of sound waves.

The hostel has spendid common areas. The kitchen is large and is stocked with most any type of kitchen item you may need. The dining room and living room have reading material about the local area. The rooms are clean, with one to six beds per room. One night, rats or mice (or some animal) were heard scurrying around in the wall. Definitely not a pleasant sound, but it does add to the aura of staying in a country farmhouse.

If visiting the hostel during the summer months, it is suggested that you call ahead to make sure there are beds available. But during the spring and fall, especially on weeknights, it is likely that you may have to share the hostel with only a couple of other people.

I wanted to visit this hostel since I first read about in in the old AYH membership guide in 1975. We stayed there with our two kids in August 2006 and we were very pleased. The hostel is in a big old farm house in a national park only two kilometers from I-80, the road that replaced Route 66 as the main east west road in the U.S. The bathrooms have been completely renovated and are very clean and comfortable. The kitchen is old but spectacular; every pot, pan, and utensil can be found. I even cooked here. There is no TV and it the hostel has a time warp feel, with an old Kenwood stereo and 1970 artifacts. A great place to break a cross-country road trip and very quiet. The kids loved the deer that came up to the hostel at dusk.

Very relaxing environment. Great bicycling access to the long canal trail connecting almost to Cleveland and down beyond Akron. Good hilly road riding all around this area. The locals seem to greatly support this hostel. Nice walking trails just outside the back and front of the hostel. Seems to have many Cleveland and Akron area people who probably frequent this the most. Very nice national park staff in the area. I'll be staying here next as an early launching pont for the Eddy's Sweet Corn Challenge Century. I can't wait!
