The Adelphi Lodge is situated in the centre of Kaikoura (West End). Kaikoura is the centre of New Zealand's marine life, where you can do whale watching or go swimming with dolphins and seals. Highway 1 leads through Kaikoura and the town can be easily reached by bus or car. Coaches stop just two hundred meters from the backpackers. The hostel provides plenty of off-street parking right behind the building.
The condition of the building is excellent and it is situated very conveniently. The inside of the building is nicely decorated and plenty of clean bathroom facilities are provided. The kitchen is spacious and very well equipped. Tea and coffee are free. A free, hot soup is offered at night time. The dorms are very clean and are provided with a sink each. A hot spa and a hammock offer a place to relax. The beach is just across the road. The porch is equipped with chairs and tables and is a brilliant spot to watch street life and to meet follow travelers.
The common area is very cosy and furnished with plenty of couches, a big TV screen (which is running constantly), and a large video collection. A pool billiard table is in the common area. Four internet terminals are at your disposal for a moderate charge. There is a card phone in a separate room, which offers privacy while making calls (credit cards are accepted). Free bikes, helmets, and locks are provided. Hairdryer and adapters can be borrowed from reception.
Staff are very helpful and friendly, which seems to be one of the maxims of this hostel. The atmosphere is social and fun. Luggage can be stored for free. Supermarket, post office, bank, and tourist information are all in short walking distance -- basically just across the road. This is an excellent hostel to find a new travel companion to continue the trip through the South Island.
