The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Blue Ridge Mountains is great if you are looking for a place to stay in Galax, or on the road between North Carolina and Washington D.C. The hostel is an addition built above the Kojis' house. Mr. and Mrs. Koji are very welcoming, and so is their dog.

The Location

Hidden up in the woody Blue Ridge Mountains, it is a bit hard to find, and cell phones will not work up there. You will wind around the roads that lead up into the mountains, and then look for the paved road with a metal gate off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Keep in mind that this hostel has more of a cabin/campsite feel. There are a few bugs, but not many will get in at night. There isn't any air conditioning, but there are plenty of fans that can be plugged in beside the beds (however they aren't really necessary because it does get fairly cold at night).

Rooms and Bathrooms

There is one male dorm room with bathroom, and a female dorm room with bathroom. Each have locks on the doors. Each bathroom has two showers, two sinks, and two toilets. The toilets in the female bathroom are hidden behind shower curtains. The showers takes a couple minutes to warm up, but once they do, they are hot.

Common Spaces

The hostel consists of a large common area with many books and brochures about the area and its wildlife. There is a large kitchen with two stoves/ovens, a refrigerator, a sink, and a dishwasher. There is a TV but there aren't any computers or internet. There is a nice deck behind the hostel that looks out into the mountains.

Summary

This is a great little hostel, and pretty much the only one you are going to find in the area or for miles around. The hosts are wonderful and want you to feel welcome and safe.

We stayed last weekend and had a wonderful time. The location was gorgeous. Alex and his wife are great. There are lots of things to do in the area and hiking the Cumberland Knob Trail was beautiful. Anyone will have a great time.

I enjoyed my stay and went to see a performance at the Rex Theater in Galax. BTW, the Web site for the theater is www.rextheatergalax.com. It lists all the upcoming performances and has links to the artist's Web sites and music.

We arrived late--ten guys on motorcycles. The hosts were very gracious. We couldn't have asked for more, right down to a little handmade parting gift. Great place! Great people!

I visited this hostel whilst attending the fiddler's convention. Mr. and Mrs. Koji play banjo and autoharp. We had a lovely evening playing and singing old time mountain music. The hostel environmental standards are outstanding - very clean and comfortable.

My bicycle club takes an annual spring trip here to ride on the BRP. We are always warmly received. The hostel is clean and quiet and we feel like Mr. and Mrs. Coji always take good care of us.

Stopped by for a single night on a whirlwind tour of the USA in May 1995. Beautiful setting and comfortable accommodations. I chatted the evening away with the owners and marvelled at the lights dimming at around 9 or 10pm when the voltage dropped to cater for Washington DC.

A jewel of a hostel in the private home of two colorful seniors along the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway. The hospitality alone is worth the trip. Public transportation is poor, but if you are driving cross-country from DC to Atlanta or points west, this makes a good breaking point.
