The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Lagos Hostel (also called Pousada de Juventude de Lagos) is your low-cost choice for spending some time on the wonderful beaches of the Algarve. The laid-back setting will make you never want to leave Lagos! HI membership is officially required, but staff are not picky about it.

The Location

The hostel is conveniently located in the old town of Lagos. It is a twenty-minute walk from the bus and train stations, and about ten minutes from Praia de Batata beach. There is a big sign, making the hostel easy to locate. The bar strip starts only a minute's walk away, convenient for enjoying the famous nightlife of Lagos.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms are small, with areas to store luggage but no lockers. The rooms are all single-gender four-bed dorms. The doors use old-fashioned keys and do not automatically lock. The front entrance is open, and you need to buzz in at night. The rooms are not air-conditioned and are in need of a renovation.

There are two large bathrooms, one for each gender, with many showers and toilets. The bathrooms are cleaned once a day, and get very dirty. There is no soap dish in the shower, and the area tends to accumulate water, but the shower itself is fine. Each shower includes a small area to change with a hook. Paper towels and hand soap are provided at the sinks.

Common Spaces

The hostel has a common area where a decent breakfast is served each morning, including bread, hard-boiled eggs, juice, coffee, yogurt, and a croissant. There is other seating inside, but everyone is usually in the courtyard. The kitchen is a bit dated, but has everything except an oven. The hostel attracts a diverse group of people, young and old, and the kitchen gets quite busy. The hostel itself isn't a party hostel, but it is easy to meet people to party with in the town. Smoking and alcohol are permitted in the courtyard where the night usually begins. There is no TV room or Wi-Fi, and the internet terminal is awkward and expensive. Walk down the street for two minutes to the cultural centre, where there is a free internet terminal, or up the street for an internet café. Laundry machines are available for wash or dry at a price.

Summary

The facilities at this hostel are basic and a bit dated, but the atmosphere is nice and laid-back. For the low price, HI Lagos Youth Hostel is worth it.

4  Good option It's a good enough hostel providing all the usual facilities, including cheap wifi and terminal access to the Net. The two young staff were great -- thanks to both of them. The kitchen could do with a few more items and the overflowing sewer in the common area needs fixing. Rooms a shade small but good sized lockers -- key from reception. Bathrooms fine. Great breakfast. Not a partying hostel -- there are other hostels if that's what you want. Oh, a fair priced mini-market immediately opposite, and free wifi just down the road at the Culture Centre.  , Australia ()
4  Great location, staff, and atmosphere. Constant party, though that seems to be the norm in Lagos.  ()
5  I stayed here for a week in August - was really cool, as I was travelling alone at that time I met tons of people in this hostel. Only small complaint are the bathrooms - they are not, let's say, state of the art - but that normal for youth hostels as far as I have seen it. I'll be back next summer.  ()
4  This place made my trip in Portugal. The location is brilliant, the people were great and the staff were, let's say, very friendly. The communal area is a brilliant idea and if you are by yourself it gives you the perfect opportunity to meet others. I loved it.  ()
5  A very good hostel. Clean, great staff, good breakfast (and cheap!). Nice people live there! I stayed at Pousada da Juventude de Lagos for two weeks, and I had the best time! And I will be back next year, but for a longer time!  ()
4  Pretty good overall, clean rooms, a great outdoor common area with tables and chairs around a central palm tree, friendly staff, and decent kitchen and fridges. Good location, a 5-minute walk from the beach, and close to all the bars. My only complaint is that the bathrooms were pretty dirty, mostly just from sand from people coming from the beach.  ()
4  This place is great. They hooked me up in a time of need. You don't have to have a HI card to stay here, so don't get scared away. The rooms here are cleaned every day. The staff are super friendly, they'll tell you all the good places to go (don't be surprised if they are out partying at the same places you are!) The location is great, too. It's a close walk to all the bars and the beach. The 1-euro breakfast is also great! And they serve it until 11 so you can sleep off the booze from the night before). The only thing that sucks about this place is that the showers aren't the greatest.  ()
