If you're looking for a small, friendly, clean, and welcoming hostel, look no further than Southern Comfort in Invercargill. Located near the main streets in town and the museum in a local neighborhood, Southern Comfort is a lovely house-turned-hostel. The front door leads to a hallway with plenty of information for backpackers. There is no formal reception, but you shouldn't have much trouble finding someone to check you into the hostel and show you to your room. Rooms are large and cheery with high ceilings and windows, with a combination of bunks and single beds in the dorms, and at least some are ensuite with clean bathroom and shower. Down the hall are additional bathrooms and showers and a washer and dryer.
The kitchen is perfect, complete with oven and most likely anything you'll need to cook up any meal (and there is a grocery store fairly close by). There is a small breakfast bar area overlooking the front garden, and through the door opposite this, a large dining room and lounge. Here you will find a nice wooden dining table near the window end of the room, and comfortable seating towards the other end. And for a nice change, you won't find a television in here, just a friendly atmosphere much more conducive to conversation and meeting fellow travellers. There is a book exchange shelf here, board games, and magazines--you'll want to sit down and relax awhile!
It can be hard to find these small intimate hostels during the fast-pace of travelling, and Southern Comfort is one of the best. Take a break from the large hostel scene and relax in this small, lovely, and pleasant hostel while you're in Invercargill.
