Meaning "holly grove" in Welsh, YHA Llwyn-y-Celyn is situated in a small valley where runaway sheep from adjacent pastures ramble freely in the yard. Its proximity to Pen-y-Fen, the highest mountain in Southern Wales, attracts hikers and nature lovers. Many hiking paths lie close by, including adventurous hikes up two nearby mountains, a woodland trail abundant with diverse flora and fauna beside to the hostel, and the Taff Trail, a public footpath along pastures, streams, and waterfalls.
Most travelers arrive by car or bike and free parking is available. The hostel is an hour away from Cardiff. Local bus service X43 from Cardiff stops directly at the hostel gates, however, it does not run on public holidays. Travelers range from students to retired professionals. The hostel also hosts local teenage orienteering championships.
A breakfast buffet, pack lunches, and warm suppers can all be ordered at extra cost at reception. However, most travelers prefer to make use of the large and well-equipped kitchen. Reception is open from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Travelers can use the hostel freely during the day as it remains unlocked until 11 p.m. The hostel is understaffed and reception can be curt during peak season.
A staircase leads up from the kitchen to six dorm rooms, male and female bathrooms, and two ensuite rooms. All are clean, warm, and in excellent condition. It is easy to meet other travelers in the kitchen/dining area. The lounge, furnished with comfortable sofas, a fireplace, a wooden chess set, books, and maps, is the perfect place to relax on a rainy evening after a long hike. However, the outdoor picnic areas have fallen to disrepair.
