Most travelers arrive by car or bike and free parking is available. The hostel is an hour away from Cardiff. Local bus service X43 from Cardiff stops directly at the hostel gates, however, it does not run on public holidays. Travelers range from students to retired professionals. The hostel also hosts local teenage orienteering championships.
A breakfast buffet, pack lunches, and warm suppers can all be ordered at extra cost at reception. However, most travelers prefer to make use of the large and well-equipped kitchen. Reception is open from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Travelers can use the hostel freely during the day as it remains unlocked until 11 p.m. The hostel is understaffed and reception can be curt during peak season.
A staircase leads up from the kitchen to six dorm rooms, male and female bathrooms, and two en-suite rooms. All are clean, warm, and in excellent condition. It is easy to meet other travelers in the kitchen/dining area. The lounge, furnished with comfortable sofas, a fireplace, a wooden chess set, books, and maps, is the perfect place to relax on a rainy evening after a long hike. However, the outdoor picnic areas have fallen to disrepair.
