I stayed there in 1997 and remember it was very, very clean. It is very handy for town and you can keep yourself to yourself or be social, as there is so much room and lots of kitchens and living areas. Some rooms have their own fridges, which I don't like as it is noisy, and some have fridges in the kitchen. There is a pool and you can be on the coffee strip very fast. And there are pubs with live music near there, and the lovely weekend market. It has changed hands since then so I don't know how it is now but it can't move from its good position. After midnight on weekends Freo has its share of tanked or speeded up hoons [illegal street racers], so take care.

I lived in Perth for about five years between the years of 1990 and 1995, and I stayed for lengthy periods at Ocean View Lodge, for a total of more than three years all added up. I enjoyed my stay at the hostel, and the closeness to all the amenities of Freo, along with the diversity of the people. No matter where else I stayed in Perth, to me Ocean View Lodge always felt like home, and I kept gravitating back there continuously. The owners at the time were Paul Hinkley and his wife--first-class people and good friends.
