The Hostelz.com Review
Rethymno Youth Hostel is located in the centre of Rethymno, close to everything that you could need. It is a ten-minute walk to the beach, shops, and restaurants. There are also many excursions to go on from Rethymno so it is a great location to stay at to explore all that Crete has to offer.
The hostel is easy to find. If you come to Crete on the overnight ferry, you will be met by a bus that takes you from the harbour to Rethymno. From the bus station in Rethymno it is about a fifteen-minute walk to the hostel.
The hostel is very clean and well maintained. Facilities and services include a small kitchen/eating area outside on the patio, a common area, book exchange, and internet (reasonable cost). Breakfast is cooked by the manager (again reasonable cost), and there is an area to hang laundry to dry. The rooms are all very spacious with comfortable beds. However, there are not security lockers for storing your bags. The hostel does have a safe where you can put your valuables, but nowhere to lock up your bags. During the afternoon there are not any staff working at the hostel so there is no one watching to see who comes in and goes. Although the hostel is located on a quiet street, the lack of security could cause problems.
The hostel has lots of information about the local area and the excursions that you can take from Rethymno. The staff person who was working during our stay was amazing. He was very welcoming and able to help us with anything that we needed during our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hostel.

Great I arrived there for two nights and stayed for seven. Ivan, our serbian host, is a great guy. Great place to meet other single travelers, a kitchen to use, and a good location make this one of the best. Very simple, but cheap. — Andre , Brasil (2008-06-16)

Book Online! I stayed at this hostel for three nights and just turned up rather than booking online, as I knew there were plenty of beds. Beware, don't do this! If you book online you will be put in a normal six- or eight-bed dorm with a key for the door. If you turn up you will be sleeping either in a very cramped eighteen-bed dorm or on the roof or floor or wherever the owner feels like putting you (even though the smaller dorms are empty)! There are no locks on the doors and no fans in the big dorm. It is hot so you have to leave the windows open (which have no security screens and let all the mosquitoes in). There is absolutely no security at this hostel, anyone can walk in and out and take things. Showers and toilets are in a separate block like a camping ground. However, hostel is in a good location and has limited cooking facilities (tables, pots, one gas burner), cheap breakfast, internet, tour information, and clotheslines for washing. Also a very nice social atmosphere at nights. — Anonymous , Australia (2007-06-22)

Fantastic Rooms dorm-style like most hostels. Social area provided indoors and outdoors. Internet, cooking, bar. Hospitality unmatched. — Megan , Canada (2007-06-15)

Best thing about this hostel is the common area and the friendly staff. We stayed in a 6 bed dorm, and it had no aircon. During August, this is not recommended for the faint hearted. Bathrooms were clean. The "kitchen" from what we gathered, was a portable gas camping cooker, and a fridge. It was super busy at the time we were there, which was their excuse for not being able to provide us with sheets (if you can believe that), but at that point we were too tired to care. The rooms weren't all that clean either. No lockers in the rooms, but they did offer a safe for valuables. Very good location. — K Hillock (2006-09-04)

I stayed here in June 2005 and had a great time. The city is beautiful, and the hostel is top-notch and welcoming. Good facilities, lots of character, and many friendly travelers to meet. — Anonymous (2005-07-14)

My sister and I stayed at the youth hostel in Rethymno for two weeks. When we arrived, we had no intention of staying for more than a couple of days, but once we met the staff and experienced the comfort of the youth hostel, we decided to stay longer. The hostel itself was extremely well maintained, with comfortable beds (that don't creak when you move!), a great deck, nice lounge area and the owner and staff were very welcoming. The hostel is close to the beach, restaurants, shops and the harbor, where you catch the ferry. The atmosphere at the hostel is fantastic, you can be sure that you will have a great time. This is by far the best hostel I stayed at on my three-month excursion. — Bronwen (2005-02-18)
