The Hostelz.com Review
HI - YHA Greymouth Hostel is located in the heart of Greymouth. The building is very old and squeaky; some dorm rooms are a bit smelly. The atmosphere is rather depressing, as the hostel is old and other backpackers tend to use it for overnight stays only.
The Location
This hostel is close to the town centre -- it's easy to find, quiet, and in a friendly neighbourhood. It is a bit far from the main supermarket. The receptionists are very friendly and helpful with assisting with directions or activities in Greymouth.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms and bathrooms are ok for the price paid. Ours was a bit smelly, with very old carpet. The door locks don't work properly, and the floor squeaks as you walk in and out of the room and around the hostel into the kitchen. Bathroom is spacious and clean.
Common Spaces
The kitchen is very clean with adequate utensils to use. It has an internet computer in the dinning room, next to the kitchen. The common room, with its red couches, is away from the bedrooms. Next to the common room is a rather small TV room offering free videos, which is a plus if you want to lounge there and rest for the night after a busy day of sightseeing.
Summary
It's too quiet and we recommend not staying here, unless you absolutely have to. We would prefer a place where you can have free hire of bikes and canoes.

I heart you, Greymouth. — liz (2005-09-21)

This hostel is in a huge old building full of wooden paneling and creaky floorboards, giving it tons of atmosphere. It's a shame that Greymouth is such a weird place, though. — Monkey (2004-12-30)
