Kainga-ra is nestled amongst the bush-clad hills of Greymouth. This 4 star hostel was a Marist Brothers residence in the 1930s. The ex-Catholic building is full of character and ambiance. On the side of a steep hill and overlooking the sea, the hostel boasts fantastic views and you can even catch a glimpse of Mount Cook or the Hector Dolphins from the river mouth. The old chapel has been converted into a bedroom and the study into a lounge. Guests can make use of the guitar and piano.
Take part in some of the most challenging white water rafting, caving, fly-fishing, quad biking and backcountry tramping. Greymouth is the perfect base to visit the Pancake Rocks, the historic Shantytown or Monteith's Brewery. Fossick for jade (pounamu) on the beach or carve your own piece at the local studio.
