The Hostelz.com Review
Globetrotters Lodge Darwin is one of the many backpackers along Mitchell Street, Darwin's main street. It's located closer to the northern edge of Mitchell Street. There is some parking just beside the building, and usually you will be able to find a place. If you're arriving by bus, the Globetrotters is easily just five minutes walk from Darwin transportation center. To find this place, just look for the big sign of the Holiday Inn hotel. Globetrotters Lodge is right next to it.

The Globetrotters has its own bar attached to it on the ground floor. This bar gets busy during some of the evenings, is very air-conditioned (a very good thing in Darwin), and is a nice place to spend an evening or two with your friends.

The rooms are mostly six beds per room. The rooms have air-conditioning that works during the night. Each room in ensuite, which means it has its own toilets and shower attached to it. The beds are good and comfortable.

The Globetrotters has a pool, a very small kitchen (for pots you will have to leave a deposit at the reception), and of course, laundry facilities.

4  A good place to stay The cheapest and best hostel in Darwin (I went to three different hostels). Friendly staff who even gave us some money back because we had paid too much when booking on the internet. Nice dormitory (but old) with fridge and bathroom inside. The only flaw is that the air conditioning is very loud.  , france ()
2  Bad hostel This hostel is not recommendable. Also it is central and has a nice pool area, the rooms are small, and the ac and the door lock did not work properly.  , German ()
2  Not up to YHA standard YHA have moved to a shabby motel before giving the place a major refurb -- and it is a mistake. Darwin is a iconic backpacker location and this hostel is an incredible letdown. I do not know why they moved from further up Mitchell Street. I stayed there in April 2007, and the staff said they were going to do some improvements. My major complaint was the size and standard of the kitchen, which was very poor, and the requirement to eat outside, which in Darwin weather can be pretty draining. The other major issue was not being allowed to have a drink with your meal -- the hostel was attached to a bar, and that bar had the license for the whole pool/dining area, which was totally ridiculous. I wanted to drink my own glass of wine at dinner like in every other hostel -- but I was forced to buy it from the bar. Outrageous really. Overall, there is no reason to recommend this hostel -- you can do so much better further up Mitchell Street, and the YHA isn't even particularly well situated.  , Australia ()
3  Distinctly average, central location. We stayed here for 3 nights in July 2008. The hostel itself was quite busy, and the small kitchen couldn't quite cope, so we resorted to eating out. The central location of this hostel meant that lots of bars and restaurants were on the same street. The rooms were quite big for four-bed dorms, although they got very hot and stuffy during the day, and the air-conditioning was very loud and noisy, so if you had it on it was often difficult to hear anyone talking to you! On the last night we had a bit of a bad experience (drunk room-mates) but the staff were very helpful. They responded to the problem immediately (at 7 a.m.!) and although they couldn't do much about it, they gave us one hour's free internet to apologise. It was clean, if a little warm at night (but that's Darwin!).  , England ()
2  A Letdown. Below usual YHA city standards. They have moved to a converted motel. Shabby, Needs a good refurb. En-suite in each share room means if one person is in bathroom (say showering) no one else gets in. But you can't access any alternate facilities as all behind locked doors of other rooms! Kitchen too small for number of guests. Power kept popping off. One microwave not working. Small stove very slow (if you can get to it) and the outside bbq was out of gas. But light globe over the bbq was blown anyway so you couldn't see what you were cooking. Reception area far too small -- simply couldn't cope in peak periods. Cleaners used fire hose to hose eating area (it's outside) just on breakfast time leaving wet tables and chairs. (Unbelievable!) Staff try hard in difficult conditions.  , Australia ()
3  A mixed experience We had a mixed experience when we stayed here on two separate occasions in November 2007. We had booked a tour of Kakadu National Park with YHA, which included a night accommodation here before and after the tour. When we arrived the guy at reception said that our tour and accommodation vouchers had not arrived and that he would phone Adelaide early the next day to find out what had happened to them. We were then given keys to our room, which was very shabby, with old and noisy bunk beds and mattresses. There were also cockroaches in the room. I went to reception the next morning and found another member of staff on duty. I explained the situation with the vouchers and she reached into the desk drawer and pulled them out, "exactly where they should be" she said! When we got back from Kakadu three days later we were given another room which had decent decor, decent beds, and bathroom and air-con -- much better. Experience for first night, one star. Experience for second night, four stars. Parts of the hostel are clearly in need of refurbishment. Provision of lockers would also be a definite improvement. There's also a nice sized pool, which is a bonus in Darwin's oppressive heat and humidity.  , UK ()
2  Not recommended I was in a four-bed en-suite. the only positive thing I have to say is that the room was spacious and had air-con (that you could only use at night). Nothing was clean -- the bed, the bathroom, the fridge, the pool. It's also a bit of a maze. Stay somewhere else, you have plenty of choices in Darwin.  , USA ()
5  This place is a dream for backpackers. i stayed there for more than two months, when it was just opened last year, and that place rocked strayed away. great staff, specially kate and ro from behind the bar, and george the big guy who runs the place. They try to help you with everything, like getting you work etc. and of course wicked wednesday and sunday sessions with a dollar jugs. The also game days with soccer and other kinds of sports tournament. this place is by far out the best hostal i stayed in while i was is Oz, and i spend there a year travelling, so that says enough i think. globbies the place to be.  ()
5  I have stayed at this hostel twice now, and loved it. The atmosphere here is amazing! I have met some great people while staying here and the staff are great! The rooms may not be the best ever but they are comfortable! I had the best time here and will be back!!! The cheap drinks at the bar are also very good!!!  ()
5  I stayed at this hostel for over two months with four of my friends. I had an absolutely fantastic time. The staff at reception make this place ROCK, especially Tracy, Ben and Chris, who are outrageously funny and witty. Very high cleaning standards compared to other hostels I have stayed in. They have wicked Wednesdays and Sunday sessions offering cheap drinks at the bar along with soccer, volleyball, and best of all, five dollar jugs of beer which make you sound a star on the karaoke.  ()
