Hostelz.com's Review
Begovic Boarding House is a very agreeable place to stay. Although it has a dormitory, the owners have their house upstairs while you're downstairs (it's uphill, so no worries, you're not in a cave). This is good as it means privacy but accessibility to the owners in case you need it. It can be bad if you intend to be noisy, as the house is situated in a peaceful neighborhood.

The Location

In Dubrovnik you basically have two options -- stay near the old town, or stay near the beach. This hostel is situated near the beach, around five minutes to go and ten minutes uphill to come back. Also there are lots of bars, cafes, and restaurants nearby.

You can get to the old town either by walking (thirty minutes) or by bus. Accessing the house is not an easy task if you hitchhike -- the hill is a bit of a maze if you don't know it, and it's not an easy walk. Better go directly to the bus station, where the owner will probably be waiting for you or for other eventual tourists.

If you come with your own vehicle it's quite easy to find once you find the entrance of the hill. If you go by bicycle, it will be very safe there, but your legs will never forgive you for putting them through so much pain. Although once you arrive you'll be rewarded by a fresh drink and an amazing view.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The bathroom is clean and spacious. Toilet paper, towels, and hot water are in no short supply -- there are even some hotel soaps in the bathroom.

Common Spaces

The only common space is a big balcony that can accommodate more people than there are beds in the hostel. The view is amazing and it gets sunlight from when you wake up until around 5 p.m., at which time you should start walking down to the beach to admire the sunset.

There is a usable kitchen, a fridge, and a water boiler. Also there is fast, free Wi-Fi, and a computer for people who stay at the hostel.

Summary

The owners are nice and helpful; the hostel is well situated (once you are there, but accessing it can be tricky if you don't find the owner at the bus station); and the terrace is amazing, either to start your day with the sun and a coffee, or to cool off after a harsh day of tanning at the beach.

5   Excellent stay in Lapad! We have stayed at Begovic twice now and have nothing but great things to say about Bega and family and Lapad in general. If you want to be away from the cruise ship insanity of Old Town and want to just relax by a beautiful local beach, with cheaper bars and restaurants, this place is for you. We prefer to go into the old town at night once the crowds have died down. If you want to go to Old Town every day, you can take a 15 min bus ride on #6 for $2 USD. The apartment is situated pretty high up the mountain from the promenade, but is a nice walk after some drinks and amazing food. I would recommend this accommodation for anyone who wants to feel the local vibe of Dubrovnik, while still having access to all you need to do in this amazing city.  , USA ()
4   Good place, not near the old town, and with a couple of drawbacks The family who owns this converted home, and live just above the shop, are very friendly and helpful. Overall, it was fun staying here. There were a number of friendly people, free Wi-Fi and desktop internet, and there is a kitchen. Cleanliness overall was perfectly acceptable. The management will organise tours for you to the islands, Montenegro, or Mostar, but are not at all pushy with them. A couple of drawbacks, however. There are no lockers in the dorm rooms, and the location is buried in the suburbs, far from the old town. Even when you have taken a bus (#6) from the old town, it's still a ten-minute trek up steep flights of stairs to the hostel.  , London ()
5   Best "hostel" i've stayed at I stayed here in August 2008 and was didn't know what to expect having thought that I had booked in to a hostel. Everyone I dealt with for the stay was more than welcoming, more than happy to help out with anything I needed, and helped make our stay as pleasurable as possible. I had a few miscommunication problems and wasn't able to confirm what time I'd be at the station however someone was there for us when we arrived for the free transfer (which I'd say take, as its a bit of a hike up through the hills and you do not want to be carrying your luggage and crap up through the stairs in this town). The lady did our laundry (not free of charge) and did an amazing job, ha ha, no colours run, no shrunken clothes. The old man was so welcoming, they were able to extend our stay and helped to keep us in the same apartment. We had maps on arrival, bathroom has toilet paper, soap, shampoo, you actually have your own bathroom. Our apartment had its own terrace, kitchen, drawers, cupboard, bedside lamp and table, its more like a small holiday apartment than a hostel, and was 20euro each per night for two of us, less than what was available for dorm beds at hostels in Dubrovnik. Service great, place was great and clean, about 5-10 min walk down to the beach, beautiful beautiful area, as all of Dubrovnik is. They also do airport and bus transfers when leaving, however these are not free. Definitely give this place five stars considering the price and condition of the place.  , Australian ()
