Whangarei Falls Backpackers is situated on one of the roads leading out of Whangarei to the north. Coming in from Auckland, you can stop at the info centre that is on the way and ask directions and get a map. It is not close to town, and about a ten-minute drive to town centre and the waterfront. Even though they advertise that the backpackers are five minutes' walk away from the Whangarei Falls, it doesn't mean that they are situated in the coutry side or on a farm. They are on a street that at times is busy, and still in the surroundings of a suburb of Whangarei.
The backpackers and cabins don't have a cosy atmosphere, and is definitely not a party place. The decor in the rooms is very white, and although it definitely feels clean (and it is), it doesn't look cozy. The place has more of a family atmosphere, and if you are looking for a quiet place to overnight, this is the place to be.
The buildings are new and good in good condition. The rooms, kitchen, and bathrooms are all clean and well-maintained. There are only two showers for ladies and two for gents, and we didn't have a problem with not having hot water or having to wait for a shower. But in busy times this can be a problem. The kitchen was cleaned and well-equipped. They also have an outdoor barbeque facility. Facilities included, internet, lounge and TV, small swimming pool, hot tub, outdoor eating facilities, and carpark on the grounds.
