One of a kind! I worked at Beethoven House for two months whilst traveling through New Zealand, and can say I have the happiest memories of this place. It's not like other hostels (one of the reasons I stayed there!), it's a bit dingy, sometimes a little dirty (not so much when I worked there!) and yes -- a bit strange. I loved it! If you have a wacky sense of humour, a bit eccentric, and want to stay away from the usually completely dull hostels then this place is for you. It became my second home -- Allen is amazing (his stories about the Pope whilst serving porridge to everyone were outstanding). If you like normality, live by guidebooks, and get freaked out by individuality then my advice is to find somewhere else. But as a place for meeting interesting people in a slightly surreal environment -- it's perfect!

Would not return Was not kept clean. Needs complete refurbishing. Manager did not seem interested. Only thing going for it is it has a few car parking spaces.
