The Hostelz.com Review
Melaleuca on Mitchell is a massive new build in the heart of Mitchell street. It's got a twenty-four-hour reception and great facilities. It's a good place to spend your party nights and chill out sessions in Darwin.

The Location

The hostel is right on Mitchell Street, Darwin's main drag and so is close to all the facilities. The bus stop for airport transfers (also offered free by the hostel if you stay a certain number of days) and Greyhound services is right across the road from the hostel and well within easy backpack carrying walking distance. There is a Coles across the street as well as a Global Gossip a few doors down. Mitchell Street also as a lot of the pubs and nightlife of the area so it's within easy staggering distance home.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are a number of room choices in this massive hostel with a maximum of six per room. The rooms are clean if a little clinical, with swipe card entry and storage lockers as well as air conditioning -- necessary in the heat of Darwin. There is a housekeeping team that moves around swiftly every morning, which means that the toilets and showers are always spotless.

Common Spaces

The deck is the one area that is boasted about in this hostel and it's a good place to chill out, but it's a bit smaller than expected and when the hostel is busy can be a little cramped. Melaleuca has all the facilities you can hope for, twenty-four-hour reception, luggage storage, clean kitchen, outdoor deck, laundry facilities, and tour desk, but it can all be a little impersonal due to the size of the place. This is definitely a party hostel, it's not unexpected for all night drinking sessions to happen on the deck and around, but even with this it's all good humoured and the hostel seems safe.

Summary

Melaleuca on Mitchell is huge hostel on Mitchell Street that is slightly generic and clinical, but due to that it is always clean. There are generally drunken people staggering around the hostel in the middle of the night, but what else can be expected from a party hostel in Darwin?

3 Good party hostel...bad if you are working
Stayed her for one week, simply because you could only stay a max of 7 nights when it was the high season. You had to check out after that and hope you could check back in. This was the same in most of the hostels so not their fault. Good place to go if you like the pool, and the bar and the music loud. I was working while I stayed here, so it was a tough to sleep.

5 Clean as a whistle!
Melaleuca (MOM) is a great place to stay! The rooms and showers are clean and tidy. Actually cleaners are continually darting around making sure it is all up to scratch. The outdoor area is a great area to sit and unwind. It has a pool and a bar. It also screens movies, which was unexpected, but exciting. It is located in a night hot spot and it does get a little noisy on a Saturday, but this was expected. Service was great and I enjoyed my stay, as you will in this well equipped backpackers in the throbbing heart of Darwin.

3 Good for parties, Bad for sleep
I moved there after a horrible experience in another hostel, and stayed for 10 days. The hostel has an excellent location, right in front of the coles supermarket and right in the center of town. Minutes away from all the clubs and bars. The pools and the bar are cool, and there are usually parties all night long. However' when you get tired of partying and want to go to your room, the problems begin. The doors are horrible noisy (there is absolutely no chance one of the 6 peopole in your room will get in or out and you won't wake up). The rooms are tiny, the beds are shaky plastic, and the kind of people that live there are 18-19 year old party people, which are fun to be around, but not to be in the same room with. Also, they need a high deposit for anything starting from bedsheets, to using a fork. In short, plenty of other hostels around, find something that suits you better.

3 Not bad
i stayed in melaleuca for four months. the beds were hard to get used to as they are plastic like hospital beds, but the good side is that there are no bedbugs. staff aren't too bad, steve the bar man is good fun. the pool and bar area are pretty good. it's situated right in the middle of town and there is a coles supermarket right across the road. kitchen gets filthy dirty from other people not cleaning up after themselves and this caused a lot of problems with ants. had to throw out loads of food they they had gotten into to. TV area is a bit of a letdown as the TV is out at the bar. it was hard to hear it and you had to get the staff to change the channels. met loads of great people there though.

4 We had four nights at this hostel either side of a Kakadu/Litchfield safari and there's good and bad points -- the pool is very clean and lovely, the bar is great, and the double room we had was fine. the only bummer with the room is the timer air-con, 6 p.m. to 8 a.m., but there's a fan too. Watch out for Jason on reception, he's a complete tosser and his attitude stinks. all the other staff were fantastic though and very helpful. Security here is great, you seem to need that keycard for everything! Stay here, it's clean and it does what it says on the tin.

2 Switched to here after another hostel. Well, this was better, but still not great. Air conditioning was useful, but rooms were noisy, not that clean, and staff weren't too friendly or helpful. Also, the deposits they require for everything are ridiculous. I mean, ten dollar key deposit is fine, but twenty dollars extra for a sheet and pillowcase? Plus, after I checked out, I wanted to quickly use the washroom, and they wanted me to give them another ten dollar key deposit just to operate the elevator to go upstairs to the washroom, since there are none on the ground floor. Crazy! I suppose this is okay for the party type of traveller who wants a swimming pool and bar, but the hostel is impersonal and wholly devoid of character.

5 We didn't actually stay here, but met someone who did and went there for dinner (thanks Abdu). It was lovely and seemed much better than where we were staying. Damn! Lenny, if you are still there, you are great. :o)

5 This is the best hostel I have stayed in so far. For being a big hostel, it was always clean and tidy. The staff were helpful and easily recognized by the uniform that they wore. The bar and pool area is a great place to relax and meet people. The rooms are good size with comfortable beds and air-conditioning. Bathrooms are very clean. It is very secure with swipe cards gaining you access to all areas, and also to your dorm. No real downside to this hostel apart from you have to pay a deposit for everything, sheets, swipe cards, and crockery. Excellent hostel. I would recommend it to anyone.

5 Great hostel, definitely the best I have stayed in. It is really clean and the pools are brilliant. Volleyball on a Wednesday is a laugh. The rooms are really clean and comfortable and air-conditioned with a fan also, though the air-conditioning only works from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Bathrooms are very clean and the bar is great, with two happy hours. It's a really friendly hostel. I'm travelling on my own and found it great to meet people. There is also a 24-hour supermarket across the road, which is good, as all the places to eat nearby will be closed when you fall out of one of the many pubs. It's the best hostel ever. You will love it here.

5 Just perfect. This without a doubt is the best hostel in Darwin. It is sterile looking but it is worth it. It's clean and tidy. There are two pools, which I don't think I could get cleaner if I cleaned them myself — they were spotless. The mattresses have a waterproof cover — great for preventing bed bugs. Deposits for sheets and keys and plates, etc., is high but don't let this put you off. The manager is friendly and helpful. I highly recommend it.
