The Hostelz.com Review
Tauranga YHA is a clean hostel situated within walking distance of shops and cafes, and ten minutes' walk from the Intercity bus station. A fully equipped kitchen, plus a spacious dining room and lounge, overlooks a large back lawn, garden, trees and landscaped wetland, shielding guests from the traffic of the nearby motorway. A BBQ and outdoor dining area is popular with guests.
There is a short walk through native bush at the back of the property, where you can spot the native trees that each room in the hostel is named after, as well as view a display of YHA signs over the years.
You can borrow sports equipment for a variety of games and watch a movie or two from the hostel's free video library. Try your luck with the rune stones in the passageway and learn about the ancient Nordic alphabet of magic.
Bedding and towels are provided; all rooms have individual heating. A wide range of rooms are available, including doubles, twins, and dorm rooms. Although anyone can stay at the hostel, do expect a surcharge each night if you don't have a YHA card.
One important thing to note -- if you need to get up in the middle of the night to do your business, please take your key with you. The door of your room will swing shut and lock, and you'll end up sleeping on the floor in the passageway for the rest of the night. Also, do not try to go out onto the back lawn before 8 a.m. or you'll set the security alarm off!

We loved this hostel. We had a private room that was not only cheap and clean, but cosy with some lovely homey touches! The staff were very friendly, even ordering pizza to be delivered for us -- made us feel so comfortable after some awful accommodation. It was a bit further out than others in Mt. Manganui, but well worth it! — Girlygirl (2006-10-05)

Best hostel we stayed at in New Zealand. It had a friendly staff, and lovely rooms. If you're in Tauranga make sure you book an aerobatic plane flight--it's fantastic. — Mario and Jen (2004-06-28)
