The Hostelz.com Review
The Funky Green Voyager is a remarkable little hostel with a great social atmosphere but without a full-on party vibe.

The Location

It is a fifteen-minute walk from the main bus station and well worth the walk to stay here. An airport bus can drop you off at the doorstep on request.

Rooms and Bathrooms

With fewer than thirty beds, the hostel immediately gives off a warm and welcoming feel. The absence of locks on the doors gives it a home from home feel. If you are worried about your valuables, lockers are available. There are six beds to a dorm, which make the rooms quite small. No duvet covers are supplied on the beds, but the hostel will provide blankets or duvets on request. The showers and bathrooms are immaculate, supplied with soaps and hand towels. There are enough shower cubicles to avoid fighting for that morning shower.

Common Spaces

The hostel has an outstanding kitchen -- spotless with plenty of room. The owner cooks fresh scones each morning that sell for a small price -- these get snapped up in minutes. Recycling is encouraged, with plenty of bin space for everyone's plastics and beer bottles. There is a small area in the middle of the garden for smokers.

There is a big supermarket opposite to get all your groceries or it's a ten-minute walk into town. With honesty boxes throughout the hostel including the beer fridge, the hostel creates a great atmosphere for travelers to hang out in the garden in the evenings. If it's too cold to hang out in the garden, there is a gorgeous lounge with fire and a chill out conservatory area. There is no TV at the hostel -- the hostel creates its own atmosphere.

Summary

The hostel has a great travel information section, with leaflets and fliers for everything to do in and around Rotorua. The staff are extremely helpful too -- they will book tours and give out advice on what to do in the area. This is a tranquil but social gem, funky, green, and a perfect stay for your voyage.

This hostel is very well-run and clean. I stayed in the bungalow across the road which lacked a bit in atmosphere but the facilities were all fine. The owner was helpful and the hostel is in a quiet suburb, only ten minutes' walk to the town centre. My only complaint would be that the bathroom locks need replacing.

Would highly recommend the funky green. Hostel was fantastic and much more personal and relaxing than many of the big chain hostels I've stayed in. The communal areas were great -- no TV so very sociable, rooms very clean and comfortable, location ideal for shops and tourist attractions, management extremely friendly and helpful. Definitely one of the nicest hostels I've stayed in.

After eight months of travelling I thought I'd seen some amazing hostels but nothing compared to the fantastic Funky Green and its amazing staff (Paul, Tam and Tom). I only booked in for one night and ended up staying for almost three weeks. The atmosphere is fantastic, no TV for a change, so it's really social. The beer fridge is great and always full. Great advice, great location, great kitchen. So thank you everyone for making it so amazing. I'll definitely be back soon, so always keep one bed free!!! Everyone loves it here.

I spent four months travelling around New Zealand and staying in backpackers from December 04 to April 05, and I have to say that Funky Green was the best hostel I stayed in. If you are going to Rotorua there is nowhere else you should be staying. Gerard and Anja were so helpful and friendly (and funny, too) and their recycling obsession is worth five stars on its own. They certainly know how to run a hostel and have thrown themselves into it heart and soul. Good on ya, guys, you are the best.

This is the best hostel out of the hundreds I stayed at in New Zealand and Australia. The owners are a little kooky and look like Tim "the Tool Man" Taylor and Uma Thurman (not at the same time, that would be horrible). Anyway you must stay here and tell them Tim the Scot sent you and you demand a discount! Enjoy.

I was here four years ago. I had a wonderful time here. Next summer I plan to stay here again.
