The Old Post Office was originally the local post office, and is now a bed-and-breakfast guesthouse, with two dorms available for backpackers, in a tranquil country township setting.
Across a small courtyard is a well-equipped kitchen and dining room. The back lawn and well-kept garden is a great place to relax on a sunny day.
The hostel is a pleasant five-minute walk from the centre of Paparoa township, with a native bush walk nearby, the local pub, and the old Bank of New Zealand building which is now a top-class restaurant. A short drive brings you to the famous Matakohe Kauri Museum, well worth a few hours visit; several beaches on the Kaipara Harbour make for a good day or half-day trip.
Paparoa is on the bus route between Auckland and Dargaville; there is a daily service.
