The Hostelz.com Review
Chilli's Backpackers is in a great position on Mitchell Street where the majority of shops, bars and restaurants are located. You can see it from the transit centre where the Greyhound and airport shuttle buses drop off.

The double rooms are clean and have a small fridge, sink and lockable cupboards in them, but they do feel rather claustrophobic. The shared toilet and shower blocks are clean and not too crowded.

There is an open-sided area on the second floor containing the large kitchen and TV/Lounge area, which is nice to sit in when it gets hot. The reception area on street level has a number of Internet terminals and lots of information on trips around the local area.

Quite a young crowd stay at Chillis as the location is right on the main backpacker strip, and there are always plenty of people milling around in the lounge/kitchen areas. The hostel is always busy as the reception area also acts as an Internet cafe which non residents can use.

5  Good location. Nice kitchen. Fresh bathrooms. Soft beds. Good-looking receptionist. 10/10 toasters!   , Sweden ()
1  Poor backpackers all round The only good thing about Chillis is the location. You pay $220 a week for a bed in a tiny 4 bed dorm (peak season). The staff are very unfriendly, arrogant even. you will be lucky to get a hot shower and that's if water makes it out of the shower at all! The kitchen area is too small with too many people using the few stoves there area. Adjacent to the kitchen there is a laundry area in which you pay $4 for a machine to not wash your clothes and then another $4 for a drier which doesnt dry your clothes, add to this the fact that half of the machines don't work along with half of the machines at their sister hostel Youth Shack then you struggle to get your clothes washed and dried. There are also no washing lines in this hostel. You will be evicted if you have a guest over and if your room is untidy (I have seen some rooms where people have been evicted from and they were hardly untidy), basically the place is like a prison, don't waste your time or money here.  , English ()
2  Ok, Could be a lot better Im a single male backpacker in my 20s. On arriving at the hostel, The large person behind the counter was rude, short, and didnt seem interested in giving me answers to questions I had, only more interested with the young females that he was flirting with. I asked if this particular person if they had parking available, in which his response was no, only to find out from other backpackers that there was plenty of car park room as they had cars there. On checking in and speaking to some other long term male backpackers they said he was also found him rude short and disinterested with any problems or quiries they had and that he was more interested in the female backpackers. The facilities were pretty good with the rooms kept very clean. There stairwell had the strong smell of a toilet which was a bit off putting if you had to go to up and down to your room more than a few times. The kitchen area was open and very user friendly. I would have give this establishment 3 and a half out of 5 if it wasnt for the attitude received at the front counter.  , Australian ()
1  Avoid this hostel Don't stay there!! They ask for a 30 dollar deposit on arrival, it's crazy! The girls at the reception are very rude, one girl in particular. Ignored me, didn't smile, went to talk with her friend while I still had questions to ask. Plus she first offered me a room with a window right above the kitchen, the smell of food was very strong. One day I ask for a blanket, and it was 25 dollars deposit! AND the girl of course didn't tell me that it included a 5 dollars cleaning fee, so I lost 5 dollars. I would not have accepted if she had told me. Also the bathroom wasn't very clean. It is cleaned every day but very superficially.  , france ()
2  Very basic, no frills hostel Upon arrival i discovered my reservation was incorrect despite double checking by telephone the room type and number of guests. In fairness they corrected their mistake straight away. the $30 key deposit is quite excessive. Room was clean and i was happy to see lockers provided for security! Toilets and showers were very very poor indeed. There was little if any water pressure in the top floor showers which were very cramped and small. It was pot luck to see if you had hot water during your shower and there was only one sink with a hot tap so if you need a shave guys, cold water it is, not good at all! My girlfriend also commented that the ladies showers were full of ants! The kitchen facilities were extremely basic. No oven is provided, only hot plates and the microwaves may possibly have been one of the first ever invented! Fridges were small and not very clean. You also have to go up and down to reception if you need any pots, pans, knives, or boards, which is a pain.  , English ()
4  Great location with helpful staff. I was there last Easter and had a wicked surprise on Easter Sunday. It's clean with great hot tubs, and I met some cool people there. Just such a hot place. A great place to stay for backpackers.  ()
2  Too big. No one was overly friendly. We just headed to the pub to meet some nice people instead!  ()
3  It was okay. They have a massive price hike for the peak season ($4 extra per night). Some of the staff are okay. One guy in particular is unfriendly, and even annoying sometimes.  ()
1  This was the worst hostel I have ever stayed at. The staff were unfriendly and it is no where near as convenient as it makes out!  ()
