Hostelz.com's Review
Tika'aaj Hostel, locally owned by a Guatemalan, was the first hostel ever opened in San Pedro La Laguna. It is a great place to stay if you are on a real budget or looking for a more authentic experience with the people in San Pedro La Laguna. The rustic feel and the animals make it feel like you are living on a farm and close to the locals, people, and nature.

The Location

Tika'aaj Hostel is located on the outskirts of the main walking track and is close to the dock with the boats that go to Santiago. While it is on the outskirts of the action, it is still within very close walking distance to the bars and other attractions.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms at Tika'aaj are very basic and have a rustic feel to them. The beds in the dorm rooms are quite narrow but comfortable for what you pay. There are many other private rooms around the property as well and they are for the same price as the dorms if you choose to share with at least one other person you are traveling with if you have a friend. The bathrooms have multiple showers, one has hot water, the others are all cold water. They are kept clean everyday.

Common Spaces

The buildings and rooms go around the outside of the property leaving a massive area in the middle of Tika'aaj for socializing. In this area, they have hammocks and tables where you can sit and chill out. They have a basic outdoor kitchen for cooking meals and a station for hand-washing laundry and drying it outside in the sun. The common spaces also have an abundance of animals like chickens and dogs hanging around, which gives the hostel a very earthy feel to it. People who hang out here are not your typical tourist who want to party and spend their time wasted. The people who gather here are generally very friendly and open minded. You will find a good sense of community here with people hanging out, cooking together, playing music, and living peacefully.

People here tend to speak a lot more Spanish here than in other hostels around San Pedro, so it is a great place to practice your Spanish. They have cheap water and toilet paper available for sale.
