Blackball is a very remote, little town with not a lot to do or see, but if you pass by and are looking for a stop for the night, Formerly the Blackball Hilton gives you a quite unique experience and a lot of stuff to see.
Formerly the Blackball Hilton combines a hostel and hostel, as it offers some dorm accommodation. It lies in the township off Blackball, about a thirty-minute drive from Greymouth. In about five minutes, you can walk to the small general store as well as to the famous salami shop and a small gift store. Also there is a pub at the street corner. The haunted house is also just a couple of minutes away. Some remains of the old coal mine can also be seen in short walking distance.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms each feature a different color scheme -- maybe you'll get the room with purple bed sheets, purple walls, purple curtains, and even a purple wastebasket. This gives the whole hotel a very unique atmosphere. There are double, twin, and dorm rooms available. The rooms are very small but nicely kept. All rooms share common showers and toilets (one toilet is even built to look like an outhouse!). Bathroom facilities are clean but a bit worn. Towels are provided free and you can also get hot water bottles.
On the ground floor, you find the dining room, which is combined with the fully licensed bar. Evening meals are offered as well as cooked breakfasts. In the dining room they also have a fireplace. Next to the bar area, you find a common room with some couches and a TV, decorated with some fancy costumes. Outside there is a BBQ area and some tables. On the first floor you have a tiny kitchenette with a toaster, water kettle, and a microwave and a small fridge.
The owners are very nice and can tell you about the town history. Stray Bus currently stops there on their way down the west coast for an overnight stop.
