Hostelz.com's Review
Zohar Hostel - Hotel is nothing if not original. A cross between a nineteenth-century boudoir and your grandmother's house, the building certainly has character. This character however is a little strange. Leopard-skin covers adorn the beds and the smell of incense permeates the air. On arrival, the owner told us that the hostel isn't like any of the others in the area; he wasn't kidding.

The Location

Located in the heart of La Candelaria, Zohar is perfectly located in the historic heart of Bogotá. It is surrounded by restaurants, bars, and the main tourist sights. The closest TransMilenio (bus) stop is around a five-minute walk away, and you are only ten minutes' walk from El Centro where all the main points of interest can be found.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The six-bed dorm room has three wooden bunk beds. The mattresses are pretty hard and not the most comfortable you will find in Bogotá. The "lockers" are a bit of a joke; they are basically wooden drawers in the bed, and some of them can be secured with a padlock, but you can actually reach under the bed and remove the contents easily, which totally defeats the purpose.

The showers are lukewarm at best and the pressure is poor. While this may not be a problem in some of the warmer cities in Colombia, the bitterly cold nights in Bogotá make a warm shower a must, and in this regard the hostel falls well short of most of its rivals in the city.

Common Spaces

Common spaces are severely lacking in the hostel. The rooms in the hostel are built around a small courtyard, which is the reception. Here are two communal computers that you can use for free, and there are also a handful of seats. As there are only six dorm beds in the hostel, with a number of private rooms, this area never gets too busy and in truth, its small size means that it is a challenge to meet other travelers.

Summary

Zohar prices itself toward the top end of hostels in Bogotá and with an absence of hot water, and a small likelihood of meeting fellow travelers this price differential is not really justified. While its decor is a little odd, the building itself is nice enough inside. You just can't escape the fact that there is an odd vibe about the place. You could be forgiven for feeling like you have stumbled into a scene from a Hitchcock movie.
