Hostelz.com's Review
La Casa de Cecilia has the feel of a wooden Swiss chalet, with a riverside location and pretty garden of fruit trees and hummingbirds.

The Location

Located only a five-minute walk from the main thoroughfare through Mindo and the bus station, this hostel has a feel of being more remote due to its position along the river and secluded garden of banana and orange trees.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel is spread over three two-story wooden, chalet-type buildings with verandas (some rooms with a view of the river). The main reception area building also houses the dorm room and has a cool open section on the second floor with hammocks, so you can lay back and watch the birds in the surrounding trees. Rooms are basic, but have handy mosquito nets over the beds. Because of the wooden structure, noise carries really easily and even if you’re in a private room you may feel you know more about your neighbour than you desire! There’s a "no shoes" policy, so at least clompy boots aren’t another noise to contend with!

There are loads of bathrooms in all the buildings, free towels, and a plentiful supply of hot water to boot. Some rooms are really quirky; some are mainly window and there is one single room in the main building which is an open-air balcony with a bed on it, for those who really want to be close to nature! The hostel supposedly offers camping too, but this facility was "under construction" during our visit.

Common Spaces

There is an open, but roofed restaurant/dining area on the riverside with lots of board games and the hammock area in the main building. There isn’t any indoor communal space and so nighttime socializing is best done at one of the restaurants or little bars in town.

Summary

The hostel is pleasant and well located. Its biggest assets are its riverside location and garden. Staff will arrange tours and activities should you wish, but virtually everywhere in Mindo offers the same. Overall it is a good place to stay, but it is a pity that breakfast is not included in the price and there is no kitchen for guests to use. A shared kitchen might entice more people to use the outdoor seating area at night and create a more sociable atmosphere.
