Hostelz.com's Review
When we got there, a wing of Auberge Maeva Quebec was under serious construction. We had no issue with that fact, until we understood that we would be sleeping in the wing that was being torn apart and rebuilt. The hostel (this part of it, at least) shouldn't have been open.

The Location

The location is great -- it's located in the St-Roch neighborhood, close to the Vieux-Québec, a short walk from Grande-Allée. The location of the hostel seems to be the only good thing about it.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The room itself, which smells of drywall, has a double bed and a little wooden desk. There is only one lamp that works; we had to unplug it to charge our smartphone, so we didn't have proper light during the night. There is no lock on the broken window, so anyone could step in the room through the window from the balcony. Security is nonexistent. Tools, nails and screws litter the floor, making this hostel a very serious health hazard. We had to take all the precaution in the world not to step on a nail on the way between the shower and the room.

We took the private room and there isn't a sink in the room. The bathroom doesn't have a lock, and there is no hand soap and no paper towels. The bathroom has a window overseeing the street and the toilet is right in front of the window and there are no shades, so we had to do our business in front of everyone walking down the street! We wanted to go take a shower, but since there are no locks on the door and no shades, it is a gamble to even step in the shower without being seen by the people living across the street.

Common Spaces

The common spaces in the wing that is not under construction are clean. The kitchen seems to lack essential indications on what to do/not do. The fridge is packed with food, but no indication is given on what could be used for breakfast, what food is the staff's, the guests', breakfast food, or common food. Unfortunately, the breakfast is abysmal -- disgusting bagels, no milk for the cereal, and bad coffee.

Summary

This hostel has no business being open during the construction works. It lacks security -- anyone could step in at any time of the day or of the night. Even if the door of our room did have a lock, we couldn't lock the large window, allowing anything and anyone to move in and out of the room.
