Hostelz.com's Review
Holmhead Camping Barn is right on Hadrian's Wall -- if you're walking the trail, you can't miss it. It is a camping barn, but in better condition than some hostels, and is more like staying in a small country cottage.

The Location

It is easy enough to get to via bus (from either Carlisle or Newcastle) to Greenhead. After that it is a short walk to Holmhead Camping Barn, right next to Hadrian's Wall path. There is a small pub and a tea house in the village of Greenhead, but other than that there's not much to do.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are two spaces -- the main camping barn, with a loft that sleeps three and a couch on the ground level, and another room that sleeps more people with bunk beds. In the main barn, which has been renovated to resemble a small cottage, there is a shower and a toilet and a kitchen. The shower is ok; it has hot water, a mirror and hooks to hang clothes, and places to put soap. You will need to provide your own linen, or you can hire some for a small fee. There is no central heating in the barn, so make sure to bring warm bedding or clothes if you're staying while it is cold outside.

Common Spaces

There is a private garden; a small kitchen; and a small sitting area with large, glass windows that looks out over Hadrian's Wall country. The kitchen is very tiny, but has a gas stove and a sink and a small fridge to keep things cold. There is free tea and coffee as well, and an odd assortment of knives and pots and pans and some dishes and cutlery. It is usually pretty quiet, but a lovely place to spend the night if you're walking Hadrian's Wall (or even just sections of it) and don't want to dole out a heapful of money someplace else.

Summary

The owners are friendly and cheerful, and the area is very safe and quiet. Holmhead Barn is a good place to spend a few days to get away from city life, or just crash for the night.
