The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Saeberg Hostel, this little hostel in Saeberg, used to be a farmhouse back in the eighties. It is a nice and sufficient place to stop for the night if traveling along Ring Road Highway 1 as part of the route to explore all of Iceland. There is a limited window for check-in, but you can call the host in advance to arrange a time.
The Location
The hostel is situated about a kilometer off of Ring Road Highway 1. There will be a sign off of the highway that says Saeberg and points towards the village which can all be easily seen from the highway. If you get lost, locals will gladly point you in the right direction, as they did for us. There is really not much to do here, as with most small villages in Iceland -- it is mostly farms, and there is a history museum approximately ten minutes' walk away. There is a little poster up in the hostel that gives a brief description of things to do around Saeberg. The nearest shop to buy groceries is about twenty kilometers away, so it is best to bring food there to prepare. Parking is free and there is plenty of space available. It is very quiet and at night -- birds or seals can be heard along with the tides as it is right by the bay.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dorm rooms are quite large, bright, and spacious. There are privates and dorms available, with a total of thirty-two beds. There are no in-room lockers and door locks are really old-fashioned -- it takes a little fiddling to get the door locked/unlocked. There are plenty of hooks around the room to hang your jackets/towels. There is an extra charge for linen is not provided. There are lamps at each bed but none were working during our stay. The heat is adjustable from inside of the room. The ground floor has about four rooms and one washroom (no shower facility). The lower level has a lot more rooms with separate men and women shower facilities (two for each).
Bathrooms are large and sufficient. You have to put soap/shampoo bottles on the floor as there are no holders in the shower compartment. All of the water does smell like sulfur, as the entire village is geothermal dependent. The water can also get really hot quickly!
Common Spaces
The common spaces includes a very large eating area right next to the small kitchen. There is a TV room. There are no common computers, internet access, or Wi-Fi. There is no real front desk -- when you arrive, you may use the phone to call a number for the attendant to come and check you in. There is also a hot tub in the backyard with water from the local hot spring.
Summary
Overall, the hostel is sufficient for us. The kitchen area is a little small and there is only one fridge at the time -- this could be a problem during high season when there are more guests (we stayed during low season). Everything else is great -- the facilities and rooms are clean, which is always a good thing!
