Hostelz.com's Review
Pause has a beachy, relaxed, Caribbean vibe, complete with coconut trees, a jetty, and a sandy coast. It is the perfect place to spend a few days to unwind and relax on the island, situated on the island's coast, with a few beach chairs and a newly built jetty where you can enjoy an amazing sunset. The hostel helps to fund the P.A.W. Cat Sanctuary, which is also located on the hostel grounds. All the money raised from the hostel goes straight to the cat sanctuary, which provides a safe home to more than eighty abandoned and rescued cats as well as a few dogs. The owner, Mandy, is a kind, friendly person, and runs both the hostel and cat sanctuary.

The Location

The hostel is located about a ten-minute walk from the jetty where the water taxis from San Pedro and Belize City arrive. There is no sign on the hostel, and it can be a little difficult to find, however you can ask any local along the way and they will be able to point you in the right direction. The hostel is located on the the island coast, with a jetty and kayaks for borrowing. The hostel is in walking distance to many restaurants, bars and shops. The split, which is a popular swimming spot on the island, is about a ten-minute walk from the hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There is a private room and three-bed dorm available. The dorm room is located in a cabana separate from the main house. There is enough room for all your belongings, however there are no lockers available in the room. There is a fan, and all sheets are provided. There is one shared bathroom for the dorm. It is simple, with cold water shower (though it is so hot and humid, it is unlikely you would need hot water), and one toilet.

Common Spaces

The common area is the large outside area, which has a few chairs and a jetty. The hostel is rather quiet, and is not recommended for people looking for a party hostel. There is no communal kitchen, however Mandy let us keep milk in her personal fridge, and there are spoons and bowls available in the dorm room. There are some friendly dogs and cats at the hostel (the cat sanctuary is located on the premises), so it is not recommended for people that do not like animals. The animals are only let out a few times a day and never all at the same time. There are many coconut trees in the communal area which guests are welcomed to. The hostel also provides small kayaks to borrow and a good Wi-Fi connection.

Though Pause only provides basic facilities, it offers a great experience and an enjoyable stay. Mandy is a great host and a very inspirational person. It is also great knowing that the money spent on accommodation is going to a good cause. The hostel and cat sanctuary also accepts volunteers in exchange for cheaper accommodation.

5   Wonderful We originally booked for 2 nights and extended for a total of 7 nights. If you love cats and dogs, like a quite environment and enjoy meeting laid back travelers from all over the world this is the place. This is not a party hostel -- quite the opposite, it is very mellow. Maddy, Delia, Donna, and Captain Wilbert are very kind people.  , age 47, USA ()
