The Hostelz.com Review
Pujangga Homestay is a medium-sized hostel with strictly air-conditioned accommodation located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, near three monorail stations. Minutes away are trendy (and pricey) clubs and bars, and in the opposite direction local food stalls and restaurants with a variety of fantastic and often cheap eats. The friendly staff and spacious, comfortable, and reasonably priced accommodation make Pujangga Homestay a pleasant base in exploring Kuala Lumpur.
The Location
Pugangga Homestay is in the heart of the walkable Kuala Lumpur and easily accessed by monorail. Retail shopping is plenty, as are dining options from the budget minded to “no price” menus. The Petronas Towers can be seen in the nearby distance. Taxis are also plentiful and public transport is clean, predictable, and inexpensive. With all that said, the hostel is located near a nightclub, so be sure to request a room opposite, or it may be a rough night’s sleep. Supermarkets are a quick monorail ride away, and there seems to be a variety of Indian cuisine in the local neighborhood.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dorm rooms are mixed-sex, double bunks with air conditioning that may be used at anytime (unlike several local competitors that restrict usage to nightly hours). The beds are extremely comfortable, quiet, clean, and pleasantly lacking the dreaded mosquito found in many a competitor’s hostel. The dorm rooms are acceptable, but not overly spacious.
Bathrooms are of various sizes and design, so there is something to fit everyone comfortably. Water pressure is excellent and there is plenty of hot water to serve many guests. While toilets are often inclusive of shower, they are clean. You do have to use stairs to access the dorm rooms, but lower private rooms are available. There are no lockers available.
Common Spaces
"Clean and spacious but in need of an update" describes the common spaces; however, the space is comfortable for working on your laptop, planning day trips, or simply reading a book with good lighting and a quiet atmosphere sans disco at night. There are two for-pay computers for guests; Wi-Fi is free. Breakfast is also complimentary and includes instant coffee, tea, cereal, milk, and toast and butter. There is a small kitchen with two burners and a refrigerator for guest use. Diningware is acceptable, but cookware is a miss.
Summary
The comfy Pugangga Homestay, with good air conditioning, lack of mosquitoes, and great location in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, is an exceptional value. Laundry service is available on-site and nearby cheap eats make going out an easy decision. There are many options for guesthouses/hostels in the nearby area, but this one is a budget standout.

Never again Pujangga Home Stay must be the worst hostel in KL. I must say. — Anonymous , UK (2011-05-29)

Average space, poor service The bathrooms are pretty clean, but everything else is a bit rough around the edges. Better to walk on the floor with bare feet and socks. Dorms have a modern A/C, but my dorm had a hole in the wall next to the a/c that let mosquitoes in. I was told that this hostel was very warm and welcoming, but the owner didn't say hi, or make small talk, or seem to care that I was there. What really surprised me was when I asked for directions to a night market. He answered me very directly and drew on a map. However, I learned later that the route he drew through Chinatown was really unsafe. When I asked strangers walking down the street for directions, they told me it led right through the worst parts of town and dissuaded me from going. It was night time. I was a girl traveling alone. You thought he would've noticed. — Anita , Canada (2009-07-11)
Not a good impression at all! Apart from the fact that the place was cheap and close to the main city area, didnt like anything else. The guy manning the place was rather rude i would say, not the kind that you would expect a homestay owner to be. He wouldnt even answer our queries properly, it was almost like if you dont stay, there are others who will come anyways. Would definitely not recommend this place to anyone! we were taken in by the pictures and reviews and regretted it. — Roshni Oinam Santoshkumar , Indian (2009-04-22)

Excellent value. Warm cosy place. Friendly and helpful staff Newly renovated and a new wing of rooms added. Beautifully decorated with nice lounge area to relax. Six new showers with hot water have been added. The place is very clean and the nothing is too much trouble for the staff. Very recommended hostel -- free breakfast, cheap laundry -- what more to ask for? — David Smith , UK (2007-09-23)
Absolutely awful hotel, me and my girlfriend left this hotel at 1 a.m. in the morning after being harassed by the manager Anuar as he was trying to overcharge us. me and my girlfriend left, when we got outside the Manager Anuar Hamid threw a glass bottle at my girlfriend which hit her leg. we are currently taking this homestay to court. disgusting hotel. i would never recommend it to anyone. stay well away. — Kris Bolton (2007-03-01)
I am totally impress when i look at their homepage. i thought when i arrive there i will be greet by warm and friendly staff. yeah. their motto was totally 100% right -- expect the unexpectected. they're rude and not welcoming at all. actually, i am on the inspection for the hotel (low category hotel) and i am planning to promote the best of the best hotel or hostel to be promoted out. but after what i have experience i will always say no to Pujangga Homestay. So rude and no manners at all. — Elham (2006-09-04)

Stayed there with my girlfriend shehara on our first backpackers journey in KL. Very cleen & well run. The Owners are very friendly and will provide you with maps & directions to where ever you may want to go (even to the top of the road). The best factor is that it's central - all of KLs hotspots from the beech club to zook are just a walk away.would recomend it to anyone. — Salla - Sri Lanka (2006-08-31)
On the pictures the hostels looks better than at is in real! — Jürgen Heckmann (2006-04-29)

I have stayed here twice and if Anuar has availability I hope to stay here again. It's central but quiet, clean and tidy and offers a very relaxed atmosphere within a very busy city. I thoroughly recommend Pujangga as an ideal place to stay in Kuala Lumpur. — Terry the Evertonian (2005-06-26)

I stayed at the Pujanngga the very first night of my backpacking year out. I loved it so much that I stay there every time I'm in Kuala Lumpur now. None of the other hostels in KL compare for comfort, friendliness and interesting people. Plus, the price is very reasonable and the free breakfast is always great. — Jenni, UK (2005-04-10)

Truly fantastic hostel, very homely and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble to the guys there. They'll give you anything from advice on the sights of Kuala Lumpur to air ticket booking! A must-visit hostel. — Paul (2005-04-04)
