Hostelz.com's Review
Latina Hostal is a small and basic hostel owned by a brothers-and-sister team in the heart of León.

The Location

The hostel is located down a residential street, just a few minutes from everything Leon City has to offer from Volcano Boarding Tours to museums honoring the revolution. It’s quite easy to find the hostel, as it is marked by a large sign out the front that you can’t miss. Most buses to León will arrive at the bus terminal, which is ten minutes from the town centre, so you will need to catch a taxi to get there. Parking is available in the street but it would not be very secure.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There is a mix of rooms available including two dorm rooms with four or six beds, as well as private rooms that fit up to four people. The dorm rooms are fairly average size, but not too cramped with a large locker for each bed that will fit smaller bags but not big backpacks or suitcases. The dorm rooms, like most in Central America, do not lock. The dorm beds are not that comfortable and could do with a much thicker/bigger pillow; however, each bed has an individual fan to keep you cool in the León heat, so this makes up for it. In the four-bed dorm, there is only one power point, which is located in the middle of one of the bunks with the only light switch, making it awkward to charge devices.

There are three bathrooms for the hostel, including two with the best showerheads we have seen in Central America, although showers are cold water only. The frequency of cleaning at this hostel needs to be improved, as the cleaning of the bathrooms and restocking of supplies seem to happen overnight and then isn’t checked again later, leaving bins quite full and toilet paper nonexistent come nighttime. There is also a lack of bins in the rooms, so you have to take any rubbish to another room.

Common Spaces

The hostel has two main common areas. The first area is the lounge/reception area, which has a TV but is quite small and not a very social area. The second area is the back area where you find the kitchen, bar area, and plenty of seats and hammocks as well as a washing machine you can use for free. The kitchen is fairly well equipped compared to other Nicaraguan hostels with a stovetop and fridge as well as a coffee maker where you can get free coffee from in the morning. It could do with a bit of a tidy up at times. Also when it rains you lose a lot of the common areas, because all of the seating is outside; they could do with a bit more shelter for the wet season rains.

There is also a well equipped sound system located near the kitchen which the owners do play loud at times but it is generally stopped by bedtime. Free Wi-Fi is available to use throughout the hostel, which is usually fast because few people use it. We found that things that were supposed to be included in the price were no longer available, including breakfast, which was a little disappointing. Security is also fairly good with a locked gate, but it does mean you have to wait for someone to let you in or out.

Summary

This hostel is a great option for anyone who wants a quieter and smaller hostel but still wants to socialize and be close to everything in León. And with a few extra touches it could be a lot more comfortable.

5   A very economic and yet a pleasant place to stay for several days What makes this place special? Well, first, is NOT expensive so it's easy to stay for several days and yet you don't feel like you are braking the bank. THE PEOPLE -- Always the people (Aleska, Guillermo, Alex) always making sure everything works and trying to please everyone. SECURITY -- The place is locked up all the time, so they have full control of who enters or leaves the place. They also have adequate lockers but for very important things, they offer to keep your stuff in the safe in front. CLEAN -- Everyone, specially Alex, always making sure the baths are clean and working. WI-FI -- Always on and reliable. MUSIC -- Guillermo plays nice music but they make sure to stop it at 10:30 PM, so that people can sleep! imagine that concept! KITCHEN -- Open kitchen, with a Fridge that actually works! Not only that but they offer FREE use of their Washing Machine (yes, free!). They also provide bottle water for free and COLD! all the time. So you can see why this place grows on you. It's mellow, kind of quiet for people who want a place to rest.  , age 65, US ()
