Fantastic, chill place to stay -- beautiful and cost effective We arrived at night in the rain after four or five hours driving through black potholes and landslides. Fortunately, Doug had a head lamp as we navigated our way up the trail to the hostel, passing llamas, outbuildings and flowers. It was rigorous but exciting and really sets this place apart. The house is high up on the hill with magical views, and a spectacular parade of hummingbirds visiting all of the sweet jars hanging on the spectacular wraparound deck. Large great room with pool table and banquet seating. The area has beautiful land, but the ecotrails have not yet been fully developed. There's San Isidro,a local park with a high entrance fee but a fully developed trail system and pristine cloud forest hikes. A great place to watch birds and not far from Pasa de Papallacta, which is also very beautiful. The food at Roundabout is excellent and we stayed in an outbuilding with small cots, but we had it all to ourselves. Showers were in a separate building, but the water was hot and the space was clean. Very groovy atmosphere. Lots of interesting people passing through including loads of scientists and world backpackers. The setting high up on the hill maybe a a hard walk to get you and your backpack up there but once there the commanding views are amazing. The treks to the waterfalls are real Cloud Forest adventure and are not to be missed. Make sure you give Ali the owner a call before turning up so he can have things ready for you. But the Hostal itself is quite dark and everything but cosy. To reach the Hostel, you have to more or less climb up a hill (there are some steps which are often slippery). Sometimes it smells disgusting inside the main building (like something is rotting under the floor). The room rates are relatively high for Ecuador -- especially in the high season or when you have to share the dorm with much people. Also the food is very expensive. The quality is bad compared with the very high price. But you have no choice -- because the next opportunity of getting food is miles away. Altogether I can say: If you want to relax or see the nature and aren't afraid of high costs, you can go there, but you shouldn't expect too much! — Susi , German (2007-05-04) A hippie runs this hostel, and to be honest, what's there isn't worth the effort of getting there — or the hike up the hill to get to the rooms. The walks are pretty average, to some fairly small waterfalls and the tracks are badly maintained and slippery. A must, this lodge is a perfect retreat for chilling or light trekking to waterfalls and down to rivers. And the exotic wildlife is second to none.
