Home away from Home This hostel was absolutely the best part of my trip to Australia, for anyone looking for a working hostel I strongly advise chosing this one. It is extremely hard work, early mornings and hard at times as it is a small town. However the place became a little home away from home and Doug and Sandra the managers became like your second family as did the people you meet working there. Your room gets cleaned once a week, you have a tv in your room with a shower, sink and toilet. Also there is a big kitchen which everyone shares they provide you with cutlery, plates, bowls and a jug, mug and a glass also all the pans and cooking utensils are provided given you wash them after. There is also a tv dvd/video player in the communal area/ kitchen eating area where the is hundreds of videos for when you have those rainy days. I made the very best of friends in this hostel and still am in contact with them also with some of the locals from stanthorpe ... The work itself is very hard work and mentally as well as physically draining at times but if you work hard show that your trying you will be fine. Definitely recommend this place! — Shelley , Scottish (2011-09-13)
Spectacularly bad what a sh*t hole, chops was there when i was there, hes such a bellend, but hilarious at the same time. really easy to wind up, and super aggressive, silly old fool, and a total cretin! It was like staying in a labour camp, before being sent out at the crack of dawn to toil in the capiscum fields, pure hell. As for the farmers you work for, hahaha, unbelievable creatures, someone should drop a bomb on them. Have you seen judge dred, when the prison ship crashes in the desert, and the family of weirdos come and try and eat dred and his mate. haha, thats what they are like, absolute tossers. Still, very easy to wind up, and if you dont care about the sh*t job you are doing, its really good fun pissing them off. but be warned if you do, YOU WILL BE SACKED. oh no! — andy , uk (2011-04-01)

Had a good 3 months over there I did all my free months over there and it was great. At first some rules seemed weird but after while you didn't even notice them as it was a part of our everyday life. Doug and Sandra treat you exactly the way you treat them. If you are honest, hard-working person then you were treated the same way and they took care of you. Rooms where cleaned once a week, fully equipment kitchen, TV in every room, air condition. Been in a place where only thing was a bed linen and all the other things like plates, cups, pots, and pans you had to buy in Crazy Clark, no cleaning, no TV and you had to drive an hour to get to work. In Stanthorpe it took only 15 minutes. Over those 3 months I saw loads of girls get fired but they also didn't work so I don't think there's anyone to blame than themselves. If you think that the farm work is a walk in the park then definitely don't go to Stanthorpe 'cause you have to work real hard over there but it paid off every Friday when check arrived. The town itself is boring but I think most of the farm towns are like that. Just get your priorities right and think why you do the farm work and then everything is pretty good in Stanthorpe. — Kristi , Estonia (2010-01-21)

Clean and comfortable This is my first time living in a working hostel in Australia. I stayed here for seven weeks. It was not a long time, but long enough for me. Doug and Sandra were very nice, they managed and cleaned the hostel well, and they really cared about your life here. In September there is no picking or packing, most people here are doing pruning, some are doing threading -- I was one of them. Farm jobs are very hard, but if you are a hard worker then you can make good money here, if not you just wasting your time. To be honest, many of the girls stay here less than a week. It was not because they didnt work hard, it was all about luck. Whether you stay here for a long time, depends on how patient you are and what kind of job you get. Well, this is what traveling in Australia is all about. Learning to accept both the good and bad things. I think you will feel comfortable and relaxed if you stay in Backpackers of Queensland particularly if you have been working hard all day on a farm. — Heidi , Taiwan (2009-09-28)

Couldnt have asked for more! I did my full three months fruit picking at this hostel, and it was one of my best times in Australia. The hostel owners Doug and his wife were very very nice and really did care for you. Yes there was quite a few rules, but as you were working a lot (which was the whole point in being there) it didnt really affect you if you stuck to them. The hostel was cleaned on a very regular basis. The Kitchen was great, yes it got busy but dont they all, the only hostel i know with a dishwasher. Met so many great friends there and it really was sad to leave. There isnt much to do in the town itself but there are plenty of pubs and parks were we made our own enjoyment. All in all it was fantastic and we may be returning next year hopefully. The fruit picking was hard work and you could make money if you worked hard, the farm owners took a bit of getting used to, but as they got to know you they were fair and would have a laugh with you even joining you in the pubs sometimes. The thing to remember is that they are employing you, therefore they expect you to work! This hostel is the closest one to the main town everything is in walking distance. All in all highly recommended! — R , England (2009-08-04)
This hostel doesn't even deserve a star, 100% disrespectful We were offered a job apple tree pruning in Stanthorpe. We got the job after paying $50 to Base central for our "privilege card." we were give a contact number for some guy named Don as Doug the manager was on holiday. firstly we were told we could not get the greyhound bus and the only option was to get crisps that was another $60. we weren't too impressed about this. we had the kilometers to use with greyhound. we rang greyhound and found out it does rung to stanthorpe so got that bus instead saving 60 bucks! we started work on the friday. over five people had been fired on the farm that week. the following week, two girls had ipod stolen and the following day camera was taken from the room. they were also fired that day, despite being great people and good workers. during our second week of work we witnessed another four or five people being fired. The crazy thing is anyone who is fired when out on the farm have to pay $20 for don from the hostel to come and get them. not a fecking chance. One of the girls told the boss at the farm to ring don and tell him she didn't want the lift, she would walk back. he refused to ring him back. don came to collect them when he met her on the road and she told him they didn't want the lift he turned around and drove back to the hostel in an empty bus. what ignorance. he left them walk for hours back to the hostel. this hostel is like a prison camp, it is the most hostile and money grabbing scheme I have ever encountered. the people running this place treat backpackers like sh*t. they will milk you for every penny they can. if you are fired from the farm you still have to give two days notice to the hostel or they will keep and extra two nights rent. if your spoon is taken from your cupboard they will confiscate $5 from your deposit. check out is at 9 o'clock even if your bus is in the afternoon. you are told to get the f*** off this property as you are no longer staying here in those exact words just because we spoke up about the disrespectful manner in which we were treated. — maz , ireland (2009-07-30)
The hell that is Stanthorpe For starters, I didn't know what I was getting myself to when I arrived at Stanthorpe. They didn't tell me what my job was going to be, all I got told was to go to this backpackers and there would be two jobs waiting! when I arrived at the backpackers I was greeted by Doug, who at the time seemed to be a relatively nice guy. It wasn't until my friends got kicked out of the backpackers for missing a bus to work that I found out what a jerk he really was! (they weren't even fired from jobs but he told them that they had been). whilst I was working on the capsicum picking farm I got really bad sunburn on my back, one of my friends who was a nurse suggested I should put some anti-septic stuff on it in order to prevent infection (it was really bad sunburn!) but Doug didn't have any anti-septic on him so my friend asked if he could use an alternative (alcohol) and Doug agreed. Now when my friend pulled out the half a can of alcohol to put on my giant blister he immediately kicked him out! even though he had just agreed half an hour ago and to make matter worse it was ten o'clock in the evening! When I was sexually harassed and treated like sh*t at the Capsicum farm I was working on I decided to leave and when I notified Doug he went off at me! He said do you think you're playing at a f***ing good game? and verbally abused me some more. On our last night at the backpackers he charged us $50! what a rip off!
My advice, don't ever got to Stanthorpe or if you don't stay at the backpackers or work at Sugarloaf or Rosella farms! They are abusive racist pigs! — Aleisha , New Zealand (2009-01-08)
be warned! please do not stay at this poor excuse for a backpackers! the guy chops is the most impossible person i have ever met , he is a complete arsehole! they have two farms -- one is a capsicum farm where two-thirds of the hostel go to work, to be fair you can make money at this farm depending on what you get to pick, green capsicums first pick is ok, you make good money. the only problem was you only picked them for two hours, then were on to the more difficult stuff, where you had trouble finding any at all. the hostel is tidy and new but has no atmosphere, there's too many rules. take my advice if you come here -- check into the campsites and head to the employment exchange, you'll get a good farm to work on, and the two ladies there are very helpful, and know all about the dreaded capsicums and chops the chump! good luck! — g , england (2007-03-30)
this hostel has definitely been the saddest place i've been to in australia. the atmosphere is below zero, everyone sits with their chosen companions in their unit and watches tv or gets drunk. The owner is probably the biggest asshole i have met in australia. word of warning -- he kicks you out if you don't work for a day, no refunds. he has infused his personality into the place, that's for sure. meals are six dollars now, they are pretty nice and pretty much the only thing to eat if you are anti-microwave. the fact that microwaves suck all the nutrients out of your food obviously hasn't reached stanthorpe yet, as well as the fact that it is not a good idea to marry your sister. You can make a lot of money at capsicum-picking if you are good (120 to 200 dollars a day), but you will spend most of it trying to repair your back. apples is better for your health, but most people make around four to five bins in ten hours. at 25 dollars a bin, that's not a lot. my advice -- do not go to stanthorpe, unless you are a homicidal maniac. In that case, have fun! — steven (2007-03-04)

Really nice hostel. There are only microwaves but you can make fairly decent meals if you're not an idiot in a microwave, mostly pasta based. The Koreans managed really well anyway. There's Maria anyway, she comes in and cooks monster size portions of food for those who won't cook, $5 a meal, well worth it though. Loads of work in the right season and everyone gets along. Chops is great, just don't upset him, heard a few people faced the wrath of Chops, but if you don't act like a nob then you'll be fine. Saved loads of money in six weeks and still went down to Central every Saturday and got trolleyed. — Andy (2006-08-27)
I stayed at this hostel a while ago, and to be honest it was like living in hell!!! You had nothing to do, as Stanthorpe is a dump, and the hostel is maybe clean but the attitude that you get off Chops and his crazy bird is unbelievable!!! Take my advice and just keep away from Stanthorpe all together. It is a very, very weird place. (Ever watched the League of Gentleman?) The only good place is the central inn, as the locals are so funny!!! — Kris Asson (2005-10-25)

We stayed for three weeks and it is very clean. There are only microwaves there, but a nice lady who comes in and cooks six days a week offers a main meal for $5 and it's enough to feed two people! Chops is a really nice bloke and Judy is nice, just a bit quiet. I really enjoyed our stay. — Jen and Jamie (2005-03-02)

I spent three months here and it was fantastic! Judy was a bit weird but you don't have to speak to her. Chops was fantastic; he found me a job the day I got there and I started the next day. — Leigh (2005-02-14)

I spent more than five weeks in this hostel. It was very clean, well maintained, and had good beds and only five people to a room. It was a good choice in my opinion. The owner (Chops) was very friendly and I worked most of the time. (It depends on the season, of course). I don't know much about his wife, but I had a good time in Stanthorpe. The only problem is the kitchen, because there are only microwaves provided. But it's not a problem to cook your meal for a couple of days in a microwave. — Anonymous (2005-01-03)
Judy (the owner) seemed to have a problem relating to people. I wouldn't recommend this hostel because I just did not feel welcome. — Anonymous (2004-09-20)
