The Hostelz.com Review
This place is not so obvious from the outside and once you get buzzed into the building you have to go upstairs and be buzzed into the door—make sure you go to the place marked "Chez Patrick" because there is another hostel upstairs. This is a small hostel within reasonable walking distance from the train station (10-15 minutes with heavy packs).
The rooms have 5 bunks and are very clean, cleaned daily in fact. The shower and toilets are in the hall, though there is a sink conveniently located in the room. The pot is right in the reception area which can be a bit disconcerting if you need to go in private—you got to get over that if you plan to hostel for long. The place is very small and run pleasantly and efficiently. They speak perfect English and will treat you fairly. Oh, and the showers were a dream, hot with great water pressure! There is a limited little kitchen, just a fridge, sink, table and coffee pot. There is no microwave and no stove or oven—but it's better than no kitchen at all if you are eating on a budget. There are loads of places to grab pizza, panini or Chinese, but a little place called "Le Petite Biche" about 5 minutes away (ask the reception for directions) is well worth it if you ever eat out. The reception is more than willing to give you directions and recommendations to help you get on your way and that helps when you are new in town.
There was a good vibe to this place. The people staying there were cool. Plus there is a wall full of pamphlets and info on other places to stay and internet services down the block in one direction, laundrymat in the other direction. The front desk is so cool in fact that they will wait up for you if you call in advance and let them know you are coming in late! The beach is about a 15-20 minute walk away and there are loads of old-town shops and stuff to see and it's all walkable.

A great hostel to stay! we stayed there in the end of july '08. Patrick is a very nice guy, I think it's his passion to run the hostel! there are air conditioned rooms. everything is very clean. the only negative thing is that the kitchen is very small and doesn't have a lot of equipment. It's close to the train station and to the main shopping street. It was one of the best hostel we stayed during our trip! — Katja , Switzerland (2008-12-14)

Patrick is very nice and the hostel is clean and friendly. This is a great place to stay if you want to explore the Riviera (right next to the train station) but bad location for Nice. The area is sketchy (walk quickly with eyes straight ahead!) and twenty-minute walk from the beach and Nice sights. — Sam , USA (2007-05-23)

I felt really safe staying at Chez Patrick. Patrick is a friendly manager. I found that the hostel was really clean. The location was only three to five minutes from the train station and airport express bus stop. Though there is no Internet connection, there's an Internet cafe right next door. — Joseph , CANADA (2007-05-20)

We enjoyed our stay at Chez Patrick! We got to Nice without a reservation (we tried calling them over the phone, but could not get through) but easily checked in and were immediately able to move into our room and take a shower. The showers are clean and there is a sink in the rooms, which is convenient. There was a kitchen that was well-used (it was hard to get in sometimes because there was so many people in it). The location is convenient since it is so close to the train station and the main street. — Christine (2006-08-20)
The manager who greeted us was utterly rude. Big JACKASS. 2 SHOWERS AND 2 TOILET FOR ALL THE HOSTEL. don't go there for the price -- 21 EUROS no breakfast, you can find much much better. — alan (2006-08-08)

I loved this hostel. We stayed for three days and met tons of great people and had so much fun going out in Nice. When I was incapacitated with a jet lag/hangover I was left alone to sleep away half my day. The only common area to speak of is the kitchen but that wasn't so bad and nobody bothered us when we drank in there. The situation with the bathroom isnt the greatest but the place wasn't at all crowded when we were there so it wasn't a problem. There may be a big difference with this hostel in the off-season as opposed to staying here in the busy season. We stayed here in October and everything was cool. — D (2006-03-06)

The only bad thing about his hostel is that there is no drinking allowed — albeit you can get away with it as long as you are discreet. The staff are great, more than willing to help and provide information about where to go, what to see, etc. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here. — Danielle (2005-09-13)

This was a very clean hostel, which can be a relief. I stayed in a dorm room with three other people. Patrick is a nice guy but is often unavailable. If you go to this hostel, be sure to arrive when his hours stipulate, otherwise you will NOT be able to get in. Its location is fabulous, really close to the beach, train station, clubs/bars and shops. Oh yes, and there is a lock out. I don't know why it is advertised otherwise, but there is a lock out. This however means the rooms are kept really clean, so it isn't a big deal. Though it lacks a common room, with a little effort in the kitchen it is easy to meet people. I would definitely stay here again. Nice is awesome. — Catherine (2005-08-29)
I stayed in this hostel in 2003. Patrick was unavailable most of the time. He refused to keep my luggages for an extra two hours and charged me for a full day for just those two hours. The place is clean. No smoking, no alcohol, no social place to hang out. I think it sucks. If you don't care about all that or about privacy in the bathroom, it sounds OK. Still, it is kind of expensive but very close to the station. After all, it is a tiny family business with poor skills in languages. — Ray (2005-07-29)

(Bias: we were in a double room) The hostel was excellent. The rooms were clean and well kept. The kitchen facilities were excellent. Washrooms were clean and a new shower was recently added. Patrick runs a professional business, so I don't blame him for charging 2 euros for storing bags for a day. Just check out the size and cost of lockers at the train station. You'll see why it's a deal. — Steve (2005-06-03)

I stayed here with a friend in April 2005 for one night, and both of us wished we had been able to spend a longer time in Nice and at Chez Patrick. The hostel was spotlessly clean and very quiet. There were only four of us in the dorm room we had booked, so there was plenty of room to spread out. We were able to get into the dorm as soon as we arrived early in the morning and left our backpacks while we explored the town. Toilets/showers were very clean and neither of us ever had to wait in line. Patrick was extremely accommodating about our check-out/key drop-off since we had to leave early the next morning to make our train. The ten-minute walk to the beach isn't bad at all, and the hostel is conveniently located in the vicinity of the train station. Highly recommended! — Anonymous (2005-05-25)

My wife and I spent a week as guests of Chez Patrick and had a nice stay. The room was clean (and cleaned every day), the location was great, Patrick was very helpful in finding the local restaurants, markets and sights, and we loved Nice (how could you not love the French Riviera???). — Anonymous (2005-03-05)

This is the first hostel I ever stayed in, and that's probably bad, because it was a great hostel, and now I'm expecting them to all be like Patrick's. Patrick himself was really nice and a great help to all of my friends and me. The hostel is very clean, and perfectly quaint. It's only about ten minutes from the beach, and even closer to the train station. Old Nice is close to this place, too, so Patrick's was a perfect place to stay. We didn't have any problems with the old lady downstairs, but she did look kind of iffy. I recommend Patrick's to everyone who wants to have a good time in Nice. — Anonymous (2004-10-09)

I found this to be a good hostel. I felt safe, and I'm a girl traveling alone. Patrick was very nice to me (and not in a creepy way) and I had no problems at all. It's more like an apartment (or two) that people just happen to stay in. There are no common areas, and where I was on the second floor there was no kitchen. It's in a good location, close to the train and within walking distance of the ocean. It's a pretty decent place to stay! — Dani (2004-09-25)

Patrick is a nice guy, but his hostel is pretty average. If you are only in Nice for a night it would probaby be okay. The location and price are good but the dorm rooms are huge and very hot in summer! — Janine (2004-08-25)
