The Hostelz.com Review
This Norwegian run guesthouse in Siem Reap stands out from many in this tourist town for its quality of service, humanitarian actions in the community and warm atmosphere.
Actually it was a bit of a shock to walk in and meet the two blonde, blue-eyed Norwegian managers Martin and Bruno who run the establishment. Martin and Bruno are superbly nice, friendly guys who've spent almost a year in Siem Reap. They know a lot about how things work here and from a foreigners perspective which is useful. They also go out of their way to be friendly -- arranging dinners at night, taking guests to listen to bands and live music and talking books, film, music and travel. Unfortunately, they are leaving at the end of the year and a girl called Kristin (also Norwegian) will be taking over. They assured me she was just as friendly and welcoming as they were. She's got big shoes to fill!
The guesthouse is pretty new and has a touch of European style with all wooden furniture, private bathrooms, air conditioning, a bar and a library. All the rooms have linen, towels, cane chests and attached bathrooms and the beds have the official Earthwalkers logos carved in the wood -- a nice touch. The dorms only have two bunks in each, so it's almost like a private room, also with it's own attached bathroom.
In the reception area is a bar that's great for hanging out in. There's a collection of black and white photographs of Siem Reap on the walls. Outside in the garden are hammocks and at night they light lanterns in the garden. They also plan to have a swimming pool soon.
They do some sort of charity work with an orphanage or school near Siem Reap. Guests can donate clothes, money, books or attend dance nights at a small cost, all proceeds to the children. Martin and Bruno can also help arrange your daily itineraries. The social atmosphere they encourage is really enjoyable so if you're alone they more than make up for it. At night if you don't go out it's really nice to chill out with Bruno's good selection of music -- just pray for no power cuts at night!

Only good on the surface Appearances in SE Asia, after eight months of travel, are what I've found can be most deceiving. What started out as a good stay became one of worry and annoyance. I came to Siem Reap to volunteer for 2 weeks with a local organization. Earthwalkers was recommended by them, and the hotel gave me a discount for staying so long. So, I thought well that sounds great. And it was. Until I discovered someone had GONE THROUGH MY THINGS to the very bottom of my bag into my tennis shoe and took fifty dollars I had stashed in there. The ironic part of this -- it was the money I had put aside to pay for the hotel at the end of my stay. I quietly spoke with the manager, a woman who had befriended me from the start, hoping to just get my money back and for her to speak to her staff on her own. Of course she was mortified and said she would give me the money back, but then she came to my door with her staff demanding I tell her who did it so she could send them to jail. I refused, I had no idea who had done it nor was it my responsibility to make that call. After that, there was animosity from the staff and the rest of my stay was awkward and uncomfortable. Now, I know that you shouldn't leave valuable unattended. But this guest house is ran by a family who welcomed me in with open arms and I was highly recommended. I felt safe. The money wasn't out in the open. It was at the bottom of my bag in a shoe. My security was violated and the trust I had for anyone, even the lovely manager, was gone. Please don't stay here. I wouldn't want the same to happen to you. — Anonymous , USA (2011-04-25)
Quite happy with the place until we were robbed. Four of us arrived in Siem Reap 25th Feb, this year. 2011. and initially were pleased to find and check into Earth Walkers. Everything seemed great, including the staff. That was until our 3rd day there when my son discovered that while we were out at the temples, his backpack had been tampered with and considerable cash taken. About £200 in English pounds plus some Ozzie dollars. My wife immediately went to check her bag. Also opened and cash stolen. From experience, I always keep my cash with me, I never leave it in a room and I just assumed the others had done the same. Altogether about £500 pounds sterling had been taken. We reported it to the manager and intended to report it to the local tourist police. The manager pleaded with us not to call the police, assuring us that he'd deal with it as he knew the cleaner had been the only person to enter the rooms. We trusted him which turned out to be another mistake. He did nothing except give the cleaner girl time to remove our cash from the guest house. If we'd called the police when we originally intended to she'd had no time to remove the cash so it must have been somewhere in the guest house. Manager complicit, Maybe? He certainly lost all interest once the thief had had time to take the cash out of the premises. It could be claimed that this was a one time theft, but about 2 weeks later in the south of Cambodia, we met up with two French guys, one of who we'd met in Earth Walkers. They'd both stayed in Earth Walkers, met up and decided to travel together. Before they teamed up together, both of them had been robbed in Earth Walkers, both had been talked out of calling the police by the manager and both said he'd promised to deal with it and get the stolen cash back but by the next day had lost all interest in it. Again, the room cleaner had been the only person to access the rooms. All of these thefts were committed in the same way. Personal bags searched, only cash stolen and always not all the cash that was in the bags. Some was left each time so that, at a casual glance, it appeared to be untouched. Such a shame because initially I loved the guest house (and most of the staff), I liked the set up and principles behind the place and until the theft we were all enjoying our stay. I fully intend to return to Cambodia again, quite soon and Siem Reap will again be on the route but Earth Walkers certainly will not be. If you are still thinking of Earth Walkers, make sure your cash is secure. If you do stay there and anything goes missing, report it straight away to the tourist police, don't believe the manager when he promises to sort it. I'm not naive enough to think that the police would do anything but enough reports would put pressure on to remove the offending staff members. That was the only bad experience of our month in Cambodia. Apart from that we loved every minute of it and all intend returning. — Rod_B , England (2011-04-22)

Very good We stayed as a family (six) for a couple of nights. The hostel was great and the staff were so accommodating and helpful, offering the best advice freely. Great people in a great country. — Bryn Pass , British (2008-08-18)

The best hostel I have stayed in worldwide! I have stayed in hostels all over the world and this one is easily the best. The Earthwalkers guest house also won the award for the best labor practices of any business in Cambodia. Henrik was running the place in spring of '07 when I came and I hope the same crew will be there when I return this winter. The rooms were clean, the food was awesome, and the crew were some of the nicest people I have ever met. — jon-maarten , USA (2008-08-09)

Good place We stayed in the twin room (the one you see in the picture) and it was as exactly as described. The room is largish, with air-con, working hot shower. The private bathroom attached is a bit worn but relatively clean. Staff is friendly, bar is nice, and we booked a tonle sap tour with them. Yes, there are free bikes, but when we arranged to get them a day before we wanted to see the angkor wat at dawn, they were unavailable. However, they made it up to us the next day with available bikes. — Doris , USA (2007-06-28)
The disaster that we face when we reach the guest house was the amount that have been agreed on the website doesn't tally with the amount shown in the guest house. They claimed that the room was without the air-conditioning and the room was not as clean as we expected. With the amount of the fees that we pay to earthwalker, we could get a better guest house with extra facilities such as the cable tv, fridge, air-conditioning, and a cleaner room. They advertise that the bicycle suppose to be free rental but the story was different when we are there. We feel cheated by the false information given on the website. Those who saw this opinion please be more careful in selecting your guest house because we spend half a day solving all this crap on the mistake done by them. — Tan Yen Ying (2006-05-20)

We stayed here for five nights in October — it lived up to our expectations. The rooms were spacious and clean. Staff very friendly and helpful. Great place to stay. — Sue and Paul (2005-11-03)

It doesn't get any better than this. And I mean it. I've stayed at everything from dorms to Raffles, but this place has got soul. And for 15 dollars... Man, it's amazing. — Chris Påhlman (2005-06-13)

What can I say...it's a FABULOUS place to stay. — Sue, Dublin (2004-12-10)

I had a great time in Siem Reap and Earthwalkers was the best. I can't believe the service and standards for such a reasonable price. The restaurant food was excellent and the atmosphere in the bar was fantastic. Well done to the Earthwalkers team. — Andy Wright, UK (2004-11-02)

Definitely the place to stay for a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The staff are helpful and they organised an excellent tuk-tuk driver and guide to help us around the temples. Lovely, clean rooms. It was very, very hot when we were there, but excellent air-con!!! — Jo, UK (2004-06-22)

I stayed in this guest house and had a wonderful time. The (free) dance performance by the kids from the orphanage was amazing. The staff were very helpful with local information, and the drinks were strong!! I would highly recommend this guest house to anyone. — Kunn (2004-05-25)
