The lady at the reception really didn't care if I stayed or not, or if I ate food there or not, as long as there was quiet after 10 or 11pm and we paid our bills. I'm sure you will soon get the picture that this is not the most friendly of guesthouses.

But there were a few things going for it. First it is on an alleyway off the main drag so it's nice and quiet, but the room was a bit too small for comfort. The café/restaurant serves Thai and Western food, and they can get visas, Thai massage, and transport arranged for you. There's also a fish pond, lockers, and a pretty nice lounge (but no one ever used it).

I liked the area as it's away from Kho San Road and the nearby market was lively and pretty original with a lot of local people, probably what Kho San Road used to be like. It takes about 15 minutes to walk to Kho San Road but there's no real need to go unless you want designer coffee and clothes.

There are three bunks in the dorm in a pretty tiny room. It's off a corridor on the ground floor and it's dark with no natural light coming in.

There was only one other guy in the dorm, a French man of mid 40s who spoke little English and was not terribly chatty. He seemed to hang around a bit in the day but we didn't talk much. It's not a place I would rush back to stay at.

I have stayed at Tavee's many times since 1997. It is spotlessly clean, the staff very friendly and welcoming. The food is excellent, the security is excellent, and it is very quiet, yet very handy for buses, skytrain, and river boat. The best guesthouse in Bangkok and probably Thailand. I have met other travelers who have been staying here for in excess of fifteen years.

I have stayed at Tavee and their other guest house, Sri Ayutthaya several times over the past few years. The owners and staff are wonderful. Really nice folks, and the food there is great, too. Now they have a small internet shop in the lobby of their Thai traditional massage shop (next door to Sri Ayutthaya Guest House).

Ah ... great memories when looking at this site. My husband and I stayed at Tavee way back in 1989. I was curious to see if it was still operating. Glad to see Mr. and Mrs. Tavee going strong. I became ill while staying there and was hospitalized with Dengue Fever. The Tavees were wonderful!!! I was given flowers in my room upon return. Very little English back then, but the smiles and kindness said it all. The food was excellent ... we still refer to #19 (noodle dish)! We spent a lot of time here while I recovered. The place was spotless and food was great. Fond memories.

The only person who spoke to us was so rude. She only smiled when we gave her the money before leaving. The rest were lovely if only we could speak Thai. The tour they put us on was really badly organized. The rooms were clean but why stay where you feel unwanted!

Excellent place to be. We stayed there several times in 1994. Very helpful people, good food.

I stayed for two weeks in April 2005 and although one of the women at reception was not the happiest of people don't let this put you off. Mr. and Mrs. Tavee are very helpful and make you feel welcome. The rooms are very homely, although they do need more lighting (a double with air-conditioning and bathroom was 350 baht) As I was leaving they were renovating all of their downstairs double rooms and they looked superb. The food is also fabulous, definitely better than the food on Koh San Road. I would recommend this hostel to anyone looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Koh San Road and want a Thai-style home to stay in. It should be 20 baht to Koh San Road on a tuk tuk and 15 minutes to walk. This is my second time in a two-year period at Tavee and I will definitely be back for my third.

Wow, Gibble is still there!!! I have stayed at Tavee on two separate occasions (1994 and 2002) and I will be back at the end of this month. It truly is a "home away from home."

I stayed here twice in Feb/Mar 2004. Its rooms are fairly priced, clean, and it is quiet and close to anything that matters. The family is helpful, and the facilities are good. There's free luggage storage. The restaurant/bar is a bit pricey, but very convenient to have right on the premises. The river, marketplace, and eateries are all nearby. Tavee is an excellent choice and I will return to it as my place of choice, in Feb '05.

Mr. Tavee and his wife and the staff are the best! And if you are lucky, you might even meet Mr. Andrew Gibson or "Gibbles!" He has all the information you need for Thailand and other countries in S.E. Asia. He has been staying at the Tavee for more years than he has hair!!!

This is an excellent hostel. Everyone uses the lounge. The family who owns the place is great, and the girls working here do an excellent job of keeping it clean. It is very safe, and in the more than 40 nights that I have stayed here I have never worried about losing anything! The food is great, and the prices are right!!!

Best guesthouse in Bangkok! Quiet, off the main drag, yet with all the back packing facilities you need. Always spotlessly clean.

I stay at Tavee's any time I'm in Bangkok. It's not a $3M hotel but I've always found Tavee, wife, and staff most helpful and very friendly. I've been around and find this place to be in a great location not far from some of the best Thai eating and accross the street from an Internet cafe, and a short hike to the river and taxi system. One meets different international travelers and we exchange information.
