1 Strongly advise against staying here, nothing like brochure describes
This backpackers must have changed dramatically in the last few years as when a friend and I stayed there last week it was pretty awful. The other guests, who appeared to be long stayers, left the kitchen, bathroom, and lounge so dirty they were uninhabitable; stole our labeled food; and kept us up all night with their loud, foul mouthed conversations.

4 Nothing special but it's clean and friendly. It's a short walk into town and there's a fabulous Chinese restaurant en route!

5 This place is great. I spent three months there and met some great people. The staff are great too.

4 Around The World Backpackers is situated along busy Barbadoes street just outside the real city centre of lovely Christchurch. The extremely friendly owners Fraser and Janneke (Dutch heritage) go well out of the way to make your stay feeling like home. With 46 being the maximum number of people to stay it is not too big, although the four bed dorms are a bit small. The place is clean and there are seperate showers for women but also a unisex bathroom for the less shy ones. In winter there is free internet and they have probably the cheapest long stay winter deals in town. The kitchen is too small for the size of the backpackers, but if the place is not too full it is ok. The big cosy tent in the garden makes up for the lack of space in the kitchen. In winter it is quiet anyway and so the kitchen is not a problem. There is a barbecue in the garden for those great kiwi evenings. Free tea and coffee and tens of fre herbs and spices give that little extra for the backpacker. Even free towels when asked. Great! Janneke constantly cleans after all backpackers and deserves a trophy for that. The TV room has over 50 free videos and the hostal has free parking available for those with their own transport. For those without transport it is about 15 minutes walk from the busstation. The usual stack of information about places to visit and other hostels can be found in the hallway. A weekly or so changing doorcode keeps the place secure and gives 24 hours access.

5 I met my first love/present partner here while doing my laundry. The staff and other guests rocked!
