Apparently the Lazy Fish is no longer a budget traveller's accommodation. According to their website, it's now a very expensive 'child-free' luxury retreat.

I was there in '96 and it is the hostel I always talk about when recounting my travels (even now eleven years later). A fabulous place. At the time I had just received some bad news and it was a place to escape from reality. Would love to go back now in happier times.

Have been to the Lazy Fish twice -- definitely the most gorgeous place on earth and cheap. Two people to have all the facilities, privacy, not to mention three meals, morning and afternoon tea (homemade baking) plus wait there is more. A complimentary pre-dinner drink and nibbles. Aad decanter of Port in your room together with tea and proper coffee. This place is worth every dollar -- anywhere else in the world you'd pay at least double the rates here.

I visited the Lazy Fish in April 1997 — loved the phone booth! Great place in every way. I'm surprised (and sad) to read about the conversion to luxury digs. Not suitable for my budget, thank you. Well, at least I have the memories.

It is an excellent place but it's just not a backpackers. So what? And it's $485 for a couple, including two nights with bed, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It's pretty cheap, really, a beautiful place.

When did the phone box make an appearance on the jetty? I remember being there in December '91. It was the most friendly, relaxed backpackers I had ever stayed in. I recall a hot day lying on a sun lounger, looking out across the Marlborough Sounds, with Van Morrison playing on the stereo. It doesn't get any better. Sitting in the hot tub then jumping into the sea to cool down in the evenings. There was an incident with a possum but apart from that....

This was my favorite hostel in the world. I'm sad that it's gone. I got engaged here on the dock under a full moon.

I was in the Lazy Fish in 2002 and I still wear the T-shirt I bought here. It was such a wonderful time! Three nights were definitely not enough. Now that I surely will never ever stay here again (not at the current prices) I feel even more pity that I didn't stay longer. At the time I was here they were already talking about turning it into an expensive lodge.

I went there in 1991, and it was a great time!! Now it seems to be a luxury retreat, no longer affordable for normal travellers--what a pity.

It used to be about $25 per night. Now it's close to $500!
I stayed with my partner about a year ago for three nights when it was slightly more affordable (c. $300 per night). It was very pleasant with a beautiful location and rooms, but the service and food was not quite up to the level I would expect at the price. The laid-back staff (including Wwoofers, "Maaaan") still seemed to be in back-packer mode. With another $200+ per night added on since, I hope things have improved in this area.

I had an absolutely wonderful time at the Lazy Fish. I was there in 99. What a pitty it changed that way. It is the place you dream about - even years after...

When I was there in '94 and '95, it was marvelous. I'm sad that it must have changed its face. It's still a beautiful place.

I went there 4 years ago when it was a hostel and it was simple incredible. Isolated cabins only accessible by boat with an arty main house and natural the compulsory NZ jazucci under the stars.
