The Hostelz.com Review
This hostel is situated on Lower Gardiner Street, close to Dublin city centre, the DART rail station, Bus Aerus terminal and only a short walk to the Temple Bar area. There are a lot of hostels are in this area so if it is full try there are lots of others nearby.

This hostel has a pool table that is free to use. It's not a large hostel, with only 6 dorm rooms. There is a nice TV room with comfortable chairs and a reasonable sized kitchen. The kitchen has microwave oven and gas cookers only so if you are craving for cooked pizza and garlic bread you will need to eat out. Free luggage storage when we visited.

I would rather sleep in the fuckin street with the bums
this place sucks ball. pure sh*thole. the staff were dodgy, especially the guy with the pencil mustache, i don't know if he lived there or worked there but he kept asking me and my friends for cigarettes and at one point he wanted hair gel. also every time we left a room he would always ask what we are doing. the beds were probably crawling with STD or something. i didn't even check the toilets out in case some soap dodger jumped out and tried to rape me. all in all this place this place is the worst place on earth.

The worst place on earth
It is pitiful for me to have to write this, mainly because it is very painful to remember my only night in there. Just to start, the room was simply as dirty as like it had not been cleaned in ages. The shower? Does not work, just like there's no flushing in the toilet. During the night, a group of people started to bang around in the walls and shout like madmen, 4 a.m. So far, I was still calm. Half an hour later, a bald man, which I do not know whether owns the place or lives in there, turns on music in a deafening loud volume. I decided to go downstairs and politely asked him to turn it off, which he immediately refused. I tried to complain to the staff employee, and he simply stated that "he was not paid for that." Shortly afterwards the employee threatened me with violence "for disturbing our place." My suffering shall not be in vain -- sleep under the bridge but do not pay for this.

The hell on earth
this is the dirtiest place in the world! the women who clean the hostel were drunk at 9 in the morning with two bottles of wine!

Weekend summer rate twenty euro/fifteen during the week. They also have eighty euro rooms for a week. I arrived in Dublin on a Saturday, could not find a hostel. I was on Gardiner Street and went to each hostel. City Manor had a bed. Yes it is true the hostel is dirty, there are lots of drunks, trash, and yucky floors. However the people there were great. I met tons of people from all over and had the best time ever. This was the best hosteling experience ever. Cooking in the kitchen was a joy. It was great that the shower in the women's dorm worked so I had a hot shower each night. If you're looking for low budget with great people and good stories visit City Manor and say hello to my friends.

I stayed there back in 2004, for 6 weeks and for value it's worth it - but they could take more pride with their cleanliness - it's a complete and utter sh*thole. I had things stolen by some dodgy french girl who was living and working there. Food was also being pinched so we spiked the milk with laxatives. F***ers will never learn. Anyway if you're thinking of staying there and don't mind living in squalor, go for your life but sleep with one eye open as they'll steal everything they can get their hands on.

The first time i stayed in "sh*tty maniac hostel" i loved it! i met loads of great people, and stayaed for about a month. the only thing t could complain about was that it was too cold and damp -like the rest of ireland! :) the second time, staff were different. things were stolen from our dorm, my friend was accused of stealing and i was accused of having two guys in my bed in a female dorm, none of it true. if you left something in the kitchen, it was stolen within 15 minutes (believe me, i went into a different room and when i got back all of my food was gone). i was pissed off at the cleaners cause they wouldn't sweep under the beds. as a test, i left a potato under my bed, and when i came back two weeks later, it was still there! About the owner: hes name is michael and he's not a racist, he's a cocain-abuser. no worse, no better. he treats everyone as sh*t, no matter irish, italian, polish, japaneese. this hostel is known in dublin among users that it's ok using drugs there. drugs are actiually also a part of irish culture. like it or not. sh*tty maniac is likeable. you just need to understand that you get what you pay for, and a great sense of humour. i will tell you more truths -all the ones you want- about ireland, if you send me an e-mail. i've lived there for years and am happy to share experiences!

Do not stay in this hostel. What more can I say. It's absolutely filthy, I do not think the bathrooms are ever cleaned as they absolutely stink. The staff are very unfriendly. I got back late-ish one night and did not want to disturb the others in my room, so I slept on the dirty little couch outside it. I was awoken by the manager at 6 a.m. He was yelling at me, "get off couch. You do not sleep on couch. You hear me? I am not joking." Stay away from this creep-hole.

This place is really worthless crap. We stayed there, luckily, only for one night. Rooms are in very bad condition, toilets and showers are too dirty to use (if they do work — during our stay, only one toilet was working, and only one shower). They'll never see me again in this place!

Simply the most genuine place ever. If you fear human's heat, then it will be hell to live in. But if you enjoy integrated utopia-like communities, angels will show on!

We stayed here about ten days ago and luckily just for two nights. We were very shocked about the place; it was very dirty and smelly. The company in the room was equivocal and noisy. They arrived at all times in the night and spoke loudly, never minding about the sleepers. They smoked in the room, even though it was very small and had a lot of people inside, and above all, was without windows!!! There was just a (broken) fire exit door, and we were underground in a very wet place. The toilet hadn't got a window too, just a little...hole? And there was always water on the floor, like a lake (it's better to say a pond). That's all, we think. Please keep yourself away!!!

Me and my sister stayed in City Manor for three weeks. When we arrived in Dublin on our OE [overseas experience] from New Zealand, not only was the hostel not smoke-free (which is the law) but my sister got a foot infection from the shower because it was so dirty. In the end (after about five days of complaining), about five of us girls went and bought our own cleaning equipment and cleaned the shower. Their solution to a dirty floor was to put a sheet on it — not to clean the floor. We ended up finding a hostel about five-minute walk away for the same price. My sister has stayed in the owner's other hostel and said it was worse!! One of the worst nights we were there the night porter let a group of "kids" in at 2 a.m. (all were under 16) who were banned from all hostels in Dublin (including City Manor) for stealing. Once they were in the room they started doing drugs and smoking and were not happy when we asked them to stop or at least open the fire exit door. They were even less impressed when we got up for work in the morning because were making noise. Yes there is a pool table in the hostel but not once did I see it getting used as people were busy smoking in there instead. Some people were friendly enough, but I wouldn't trust them with anything — including milk!!

My sister and I arrived from New Zealand and stayed here, as the rest of town was booked. This was by far the worst hostel I have ever stayed in and I've traveled through the Middle East and South Africa. We stayed in a dorm room with en suite, the floor was not cleaned, and the duvet cover basically grew its own feet and walked out the door. The shower did not drain properly, and when told about it the staff just gave a sheet to put down on the floor. (I ended up with an infected foot.) They only cleaned the room once a week if we were lucky and did not see anything wrong with this. The people staying there were nice enough but over all I would not recommend this to my worst enemy. No one should have to stay in these conditions and I feel sorry for anyone stuck there. As a Kiwi I can put up with a lot but to have to pay for this was not an experience I enjoyed. So be warned and don't say you were not told.

It's a very true that a hostel is filthy, messy and almost nothing works. I know it the best as a former receptionist :) (summer 2004). But it's hard to deny that it has its own unique and unforgetable atmosphere which will bare in your mind for a long time. If you just wanna visit Dublin, spend as least as possible, meet new people from all over the world, and forget about clean pillows and increadibly fresh bathrooms which you have at home, that is the best place I know LOL.

I would not even have given them one star. The hostel was absolutely disgusting. We had our passports stolen from the room while we were sleeping in it during the middle of the day. The hostel workers were belligerent and rude. They would do nothing for us. The hostel itself was disgusting. Very dirty and the shower did not even have a curtain. It was a horrible place. I do not recommend that anyone stay there. I wouldn't recommend this place to a person that I hate.

I just got back from here. I had a clean room, and an en suite bathroom with a lock that worked. I had a good stay; the staff were polite.
