The Hostelz.com Review
Dougies Backpackers Resort is definitely one of the best in Australia! It´s a great place to meet new people, it has a beautiful surroundings, has extremely friendly and helpful staff, and a good atmosphere! Every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, a Dougies bus goes to Cairns. If you call and book a room, they will pick you up from any place you want in Cairns. Every Tuesday there´s a free BBQ and a music night.
The Location
Dougies is situated at the main road of Port Douglas, and is about a ten-minute walk to the centre. There´s a bus stop in front of the hostel. Cars and camper vans can be parked in the backyard.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are excellent. Every room has air conditioning, sinks, and enough space for luggage. The bathrooms are shared. Showers and toilets are good and everything is very clean (rooms and bathrooms get cleaned every day). Washing machines, dryers, an electric iron, and clotheshorses are right next to the bathrooms.
If you want to stay low budget, Dougies has a campground in the backyard. People can bring their own tent or rent one of the permanent Dougies tents.
Common Spaces
They´ve got a large kitchen with all the facilities you might need. At check-in, you get cutlery, plates, and a box for the fridge. Widespread sitting areas with TVs, two pool tables, a kicker, and an internet room make the hostel area a very good place for communicating and getting to know other people.
The bar is open every day from 5 until 12, which means that you can party everyday but people who might have to work the next day won´t be bothered. (Dougies emphasizes being quiet after midnight to not disturb other guests.) Next to the bar is the beautiful outside area with a pool and a lot of space for sunbathing in the hammocks or on the green grass. In addition to that, they´ve got a small shop with drinks and food.
Summary
If you stay at Dougies you´ve got everything you need in one place. You can book snorkeling or jungle trips at reception, there´s plenty of work in the many hotel resorts in Port Douglas, and you meet a lot of travelers from all over the world.

Great hostel! Good clean facilities, bike hire, pool, bbq, clean kitchen and bar area. Apparently the cheapest bar in Port Douglas -- doesn't keep you awake at night though -- perfect! We had a double room (with fridge, drawers, TV) it was fab, good comfy bed and great aircon. You can either join in the fun at the bar or just relax and watch TV or chill out in your room undisturbed. The staff were very friendly and really helpful when it came to booking our Great Barrier Reef trip. Free bus to Cairns -- only on certain days though. — Nicola (2007-03-25)

Dougies is one of the best hostels on the East Coast -- you would be mad to stay anywhere else in Port Douglas. Staff are very friendly and the parties rock! — Liz (2006-09-12)

We had the best time at Dougies. This is by far the best hostel in Australia. We made great friends and partied for two months. It is the most relaxing place everyone there is so honest and lovely. There is such a warm friendly feel to the place its like been part of a big family. We had only intended to stay a night and ended up staying two months. We all cried leaving but we had to move on. Staff were wonderful you should definitely check this place out its brilliant. — Niamh, Aideen, Orla and Dee.-aka Patsy's Bitches (2006-01-30)

I had four fantastic months as part of the Dougies family in 2003. There were beach parties, Oscar the birdie, an amazing campsite with a great community spirit, beautiful pool, tranquil garden and hammocks and a mad bar. It's not far from the town at all and the staff are great. You will have the best time here, we all did!! I'll never forget Tentville 2003!! — Louise Dunwoodie (2005-01-26)

I LOVED IT!! This place has a very relaxed atmosphere, a good bar and facilities, large garden and pool, spacious clean dorms with comfortable beds and decent air-conditioning. It also has good showers and a shop. It has a very friendly staff; nothing was too much trouble for them. There is a good job board and tourist information. It's 10 minutes from the beach, but a fair walk from the town. Lots of people hire bikes. They also run a free shuttle bus to Cairns and back three times a week, which is very useful! This place was the highlight of my East Coast adventure by far. I have lots of fond memories. :) — Marie (2004-10-12)

Great friendly atmosphere, comfy hammocks, and heaps of palm trees. I highly recommend staying here. Location could be a little closer to the city/beach, but you won't find a better place on the east coast. — Johnny (2004-08-13)

Very friendly staff, KICK BACK and RELAXXX! — Tom (2004-01-18)
