Dougies Backpackers Resort is definitely one of the best in Australia! It´s a great place to meet new people, it has a beautiful surroundings, has extremely friendly and helpful staff, and a good atmosphere! Every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, a Dougies bus goes to Cairns. If you call and book a room, they will pick you up from any place you want in Cairns. Every Tuesday there´s a free BBQ and a music night.
The Location
Dougies is situated at the main road of Port Douglas, and is about a ten-minute walk to the centre. There´s a bus stop in front of the hostel. Cars and camper vans can be parked in the backyard.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are excellent. Every room has air conditioning, sinks, and enough space for luggage. The bathrooms are shared. Showers and toilets are good and everything is very clean (rooms and bathrooms get cleaned every day). Washing machines, dryers, an electric iron, and clotheshorses are right next to the bathrooms.
If you want to stay low budget, Dougies has a campground in the backyard. People can bring their own tent or rent one of the permanent Dougies tents.
Common Spaces
They´ve got a large kitchen with all the facilities you might need. At check-in, you get cutlery, plates, and a box for the fridge. Widespread sitting areas with TVs, two pool tables, a kicker, and an internet room make the hostel area a very good place for communicating and getting to know other people.
The bar is open every day from 5 until 12, which means that you can party everyday but people who might have to work the next day won´t be bothered. (Dougies emphasizes being quiet after midnight to not disturb other guests.) Next to the bar is the beautiful outside area with a pool and a lot of space for sunbathing in the hammocks or on the green grass. In addition to that, they´ve got a small shop with drinks and food.
Summary
If you stay at Dougies you´ve got everything you need in one place. You can book snorkeling or jungle trips at reception, there´s plenty of work in the many hotel resorts in Port Douglas, and you meet a lot of travelers from all over the world.
