The Hostelz.com Review
Gdansk hostel is in the Targ Rybnym area of Gdansk, at the river bend and near the old town. The walk from the trains is about 10 minutes.

It is right on the river in a quaint cottage-style house. Internet use and laundry (with dryers) are included in the price, as are bikes and kayaks which is pretty amazing. The living room is big with lots of comfortable sofas and chairs to relax on. Tea and coffee are also available all day.

There is a market nearby and some good meat grills by the river. The hostel has plateware and burners, but no refrigerator. All the beds are up to standard comfort, although they are packed too close together in non-bunks in the lower dorm, putting you very close to other hostellers at night if the place is busy. The bathrooms are near spotless, as are the showers. Nice double rooms are also available.

This is an extremely comfortable and affordable place to stay which also does well to help you enjoy the town and surrounding area. Malbork Castle is an easy day trip away.

Przy Targu Rybnym - Hostel Gdansk Reviews from the Web
Hostelz.com Guest Reviews
2  Look Elsewhere I have traveled throughout all of the major cities in Poland over the last two weeks and by far this has been the worst hostel. They claim to have free internet but you must first wait for the staff to get off the computer! One staff lady was even rude to a patron who simply asked if she would be off soon. She stared at him and flatly said two minutes! I left about five minutes after that and the poor gentlemen was still waiting for the staff member to get off the computer! Their laundry is 20 a load which may be normal but all the other hostels I went to were cheaper, free laundry, and much more accommodating. They are extremely overpriced for what they are offering here. One good thing is they were a clean hostel and a decent location. However I would not come here again.  , United States ()
1  Poor quality -- overpriced really well positioned hostel however that's about the only redeeming feature. really overpriced, dingy rooms, moody unhelpful staff -- you get the sense this is a cash cow for some absent owner squeezing guests for all their worth. the worst place we stayed in four towns in Poland.  , UK ()
1  Very poor condition and unfriendly welcome I can only advise you not to check in in przy targu rybnym hostel! We booked well in advance and got a confirmation for a three-bed room via email. When we arrived it turned out that there were only beds left in a big dorm. No excuse and no politeness at all from the staff! It was incredible. Besides this the hostel looks very shabby (carpet)! We decided to spend a bit more money and went elsewhere where we found much better conditions.  , Germany ()
5  We were at the hostel 24 and 25 febr. It was very good and there were very friendly people.  ()
1  We arrived at this hostel after having made a booking through a hostel agency over the internet. We had paid a deposit and despite this Przy Targu Rybnym had failed to hold a room for us. They confirmed that they had received the reservation when we made it (almost two months in advance), but that they had let the room to someone else despite the deposit we paid (and we did not even arrive any later than expected -- our train was on time!). Therefore we had to spend time walking around with our backpacks to find another place to stay -- and because everywhere was booked we had to pay much more for a hotel than we would normally have paid for accommodation. They also refused to refund our deposit. I would definitely not recommend booking with this hostel -- the booking is worthless -- they do not respect it.  ()
5  Stayed here in late May of 2005. A friend and I arrived with two other random travelers, late in the evening, without reservations. The staff were gracious although communication was thin. This was the smallest hostel I have ever stayed in and it made for an interesting, intimate setting that more resembled a college dorm than a hotel. It might have been a little bit crowded but it was clean and the bathrooms were fantastic. Breakfast was the usual but there was a fully automated espresso maker that worked great once a native german speaker took the controls. A bizarre rainstorm the second afternoon put everybody in an interesting mood and all the guests returned early with food and beer and booze. About twenty of us (the whole place) gathered in the main lobby and partied our asses off into the wee hours of the morning. The staff came in and cooked up complimentary pierogies and brought a liter of spiced vodka for the occasion. By far the best hostel experience I've ever had.  ()
2  Great location but noisy as there is an construction site just in front of the hostel. Ten minutes walk to main train station! We can confirm the cold showers -- chance for warm water only between ten p.m. and seven a.m.! Mattresses need to be replaced! It is possible to pre-book the hostel in advance!  ()
1  They have shoved as many beds into the room as possible so that your head is at the neighbours feet and barely a few inches of room between the beds. It may say ten-bed room but there were at least thirteen beds there. The staff smoked in the common area, were rude and unhelpful, and after trying to put us into separate rooms would not even let us use the phone to call another hostel. The free internet was one computer that was broken. If you want a double room the room is very overpriced -- over 300Zl for double with private facilities when another hostel that was full found us a great place for 140Zl.  ()
3  The worst thing about the hostel was the showers. They are always ice cold. The hot water system is non existant and its not just cold -- it's ice cold showers. We stayed for three days and I never had even a warm shower. The location is good but its also extremely noisy too because we had a room at the front where people were yelling and cars going by. Go early if you want breakfast. Its just bread, jam, eggs, and coffee and it is not restocked. Other than that everything else was good.  ()
4  There's not much that can be said that hasn't been said already, but I'll just reiterate. The freebies of this place were fantastic (though we didn't use the, I think the bikes no have a small fee). The breakfast was a bit small, and there's not really much in the way of a kitchen. The free internet is a huge perk and the computer also provides the lounge with a large variety of good music. The upstairs dorm was perfect, though the showers did tend to run out of hot water after everybody else has used them.  ()
3  Not a bad little place -- good location and a great selection of music playing in the lounge. The breakfasts could perhaps be a bit more generous, although no I've complaints about the unlimited supply of coffee. However, one aspect we didn't particularly enjoy was the fact that the vent from the toilet opened directly into our four-bed dormitory. This allows you to hear just about everything that's going on in there from the comfort of your own bunk -- nice!  ()
4  Indeed, one of the nicer hostels I've ever stayed at. The owner, Woldemar, is very hospitable and speaks about 5 languages. The only complaint is that the beds (no bunks) are a bit crammed downstairs, and that there are problems with running water as well as hot water in the showers. I was assured, however, that it was unusual. Otherwise, the lovely Lidia of the staff is extremely nice and helpful, and the living area is great for socializing. Great location, practically in the center of Gdansk. Also, free Internet — all for only 10 euros per night. A real gem.  ()
5  Truly fab. The location is superb, and everyone is very friendly and helpful. Waldemar is a star.  ()
5  I just spent two weeks traveling in Poland (Gdansk, Warswa, Krakow), and this was my favorite hostel by far! Great location next to the river and downtown. They have free laundry service, free coffee and tea and kitchen, and very friendly and helpful staff. Plus they also offer both cheaper rooms for those who just want to crash/party and upstairs, quieter rooms for us culture-minded folk. Thank you, Waltraud, for a terrific stay in Gdansk!  ()
5  Yes, this is probably one of the best hostels in Europe. It has a very nice and helpful staff. All around, it's a great place.  ()
