The Hostelz.com Review
Macool's Hostel is located in a quiet street but close to the centre of town. The hostel has an extremely friendly atmosphere, helped by the good ratio of communal space to number of beds. A spacious and well-equipped kitchen is provided with free tea and coffee all day, which is certainly a nice touch after a long walk on the North Irish coastline. All sorts of local information is provided both on the walls and by the friendly staff, although the staff are sometimes hard to track down!

The hostel is small, but offers accommodation in either a four or six bed dorm, or a twin/double room. All linen is provided free of charge and the rooms are very clean. The only downside to the bedrooms would be that some of the mattresses are of lower quality than others, so choose your bed wisely. Two showers/toilets are provided, which doesn't sound like a lot, but is a ratio of 1:6 to the number of beds.

The hostel has recently moved and therefore if on arrival you ask a local or a taxi driver they may take you to the wrong address, so do state that it is on Causeway Street.

I stayed at this hostel Jan 2005. We walked from the bus stop, found it easily. The hostel had just come under new ownership by a family that took great care of us while we were there. We went out to Giants Causeway with them (since they had never been there yet, I wouldnt expect it to happen again) and stopped at the castle on the way back. Their friendliness was overwhelming. The view out our room overlooked a huge, beautiful cove beach and there was a lot to do within walking distance. The town was charming. It was like staying with a local family instead of feeling like you were in an impersonal assembly line hostel.

This is one of the best hostels I stayed in. You are made to feel it's like your own home. Staff were really friendly, helpful and laid back. It's really close to everything you'll need and very reasonable. I'd highly recommend it!

There's nothing really good or really bad about this hostel. It feels like you're staying at a college guy's house. There are lots of cool people, though there's not a ton to do in Portrush. This hostel is close to the bus and train stations. It took ten minutes for the staff person to answer the door; he was still sleeping and hung over, even though it was 11:30 a.m. The place is clean enough, the atmosphere is good and it seems like you could be hanging out and crashing at a friend's house.

I stayed here in October and I must say that it was one of the best hostels I stayed in during my trip! A must is the Giant's Causeway, which is nearby, and a tour to Dunluce castle—you can go there by foot all the way down. The food was good and everything was clean.
