Hostelz.com's Review
HI - Vancouver Central Hostel is a fun and social Hostelling International Hostel right in the heart of downtown Vancouver.

The Location

The Hostel is located at 1025 Granville Street, which is a great location, as you are within walking distance to many of Vancouver’s attractions, as well as having many options for shopping, restaurants, and bars just minutes away. A SkyTrain stop is also just a five-minute walk away, giving you access to Vancouver Airport as well as the Greyhound/VIA Rail Station, so it’s easy to get to the hostel no matter how you get to Vancouver. Parking is available nearby in pay parking garages. The central location does mean you get a bit of the traffic noise coming through the windows, which can be a little noisy at times.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are a few options for rooms at this hostel. You can stay in either a two- or four-bed dorm, which have lockers in the room and most also have a little sink as well. Private rooms are also available, all have cable TV and some come with an en suite bathroom. We stayed in a private room with en suite, which only had a radiator heater and for only being the start of November, the room was fairly cold, so beware it could be pretty cold in the middle of winter.

Independent bathrooms are available on all levels with a shower and toilet together, so you don’t need to share with other people. The towels provided, though, are very thin and could be of better quality. The building needs a little bit of an update, as it is kind of giving an old and cheap hotel vibe off with the carpeting and décor.

Common Spaces

There are a few common areas at this hostel. There is a TV lounge and a computer kiosk with pay computers you can use if you don’t have any devices to use the free Wi-Fi that's available throughout the building. There are only limited kitchen facilities -- just a microwave, toaster, and kettle -- so if you are looking to cook a feast, they suggest staying at one of the other HI Vancouver properties. Free breakfas, provided from 8 to 10 a.m. (they recently extended the hours, which means you can sleep in longer), usually includes bagels, toast, muffins, and cereals as well as juice and coffee. A laundry and luggage/bike storage facilities are also available. This is a fairly social hostel and they provide activities like pub crawls and bike tours almost every day, which is a great way to meet other travelers.

Summary

This is a great budget option in downtown Vancouver for anyone who wants to stay in a central and clean hostel but doesn’t need a kitchen to cook up meals.

5   Great place, great location, great people! Nice, clean, travel-friendly hostel. Good sized rooms and nice community full bathrooms. The people are friendly and helpful, and the location is perfect for the night-life scene. Definitely get your money's worth here. Had a great experience and can't wait to return!  , age 20, USA ()
5   Friendly, helpful, fun! We just stayed at HI-Central for two nights, but they were great! Rooms and bathrooms were clean, the beds were comfy, AC was much-needed and functional. The Monday night pub crawl was super fun too -- we're pretty sure Flava Flav was at the last club. The hostel got us free drinks and VIP access at all the clubs too, and our guide Ron was hilarious and really helpful. oh also the kitchen was clean and stocked and the free breakfast was delicious. Great stay.  , United States ()
5   Great location, very clean Great hostel -- strongly recommended. I was in a single room with private washroom. Clean!, good price, simple breakfast (but sufficient), free wifi, air-conditioning and nice staff in reception. Great location just in the middle of the city. The only problem was that nobody came to take out the garbage for 5 days. If I come back to Vancouver I would choose the same hostel.  , Czech ()
4   Humble but noisy! It's a great hostel with excellent staff and is located on one of the most popular streets of Downtown. The music was bumping till 3 a.m. all week and the streets are crazy busy on the weekends. It's a fantastic place to sleep if you enjoy pub crawling and don't mind the loud music. I enjoyed my time there. The bedrooms were nice and tidy, the washrooms were clean, and everything was so close by!  , Canada ()
3   Good but noisy I wouldnt stay here again! Everything about the hostel was good but you cant get any sleep here! The nightclub underneath has its music thudding through the hotel till the late hours of the morning.  , Australian ()
4   Nice Attended in April 2007. Good location if you are a clubber or shopping addict or library (quite close with free internet access)! Staff nice, location clean but not so quiet. Hostel well organized (laundry, internet access to pay, you can let messages for other people at the reception). We were in a private room with TV, Very nice. The breakfast is really awesome!  , France ()
2   Noisy The hostel was great, the staff was excellent, the breakfast was awesome, but the location was bad. It is right in the heart of the nightclub district, and the walls reverberated every night until 3 a.m. The staff hands out earplugs free of charge, but they really don't help.  , USA ()
3   Clean w/good location, but not a social hostel If you're just passing through for a night or traveling with company then this hostel is great. It's clean and looks like it has been renovated in the past few years. The downside is that like most HIs it is significantly lacking in social atmosphere (read: BORING!) and is definitely not a youth hostel. I'd hazard a guess that 50% of the guests here were in the 40+ range and mostly all of the other guests were somewhat introverted and shied away when I tried to initiate conversations. Staying at HI Central and then going over to the bar at the hostel across the road is a neat compromise though because you get the cleanliness and safety of the HI, and the good times and fun of the party hostel.  , Canadian ()
