Hostelz.com's Review
A tranquil hostel with a shaded garden and a small seasonal pool, Hostal El Jardin offers a sociable little community in Paraguay's otherwise low-key capital.

The Location

Hostel El Jardin is only a couple of blocks from the central plaza and within easy reach of the sights of this compact capital city. The bus from the main city terminal passes right by the hostel's front door, making it very convenient to find.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The night-time air conditioning here is a godsend during the sweltering Paraguayan summer months. Dorms are quite comfortable, with solid framed bunks, though the mattresses are spongy. The beds also come with little curtains, adding a nice touch of privacy. There are large, wooden cupboards serving as lockers (bring your own padlock, though many of the clasps are broken, rendering them unlockable. However, the hostel feels very safe, so it isn't a huge issue. Private rooms are also available and come with the added bonus of breakfast, whereas dormitories do not. Communal bathrooms (separate male and female) are located out in the garden, but close to all rooms. They are also clean, with good showers.

Common Spaces

The tree-filled garden namesake of this hostel is definitely one of its greatest assets. It isn't big but there are plenty of shady spots to unwind, with hammocks and plenty of seating. There´s also a separate roof patio above the bathroom block, which is more secluded. In the summer, there is a small pool (think an adult-sized paddling pool). It won't have you doing laps, but it is sheltered from the sun and is deep enough for a few strokes to cool you down. A guest kitchen is well equipped (there's a supermarket close by for self-catering). The room adjacent is a dining room/TV room, but the garden is a much more pleasant place to hang out in the evenings.

Summary

The relatively compact nature of El Jardin makes it a great place for meeting fellow travelers. Its owners are really friendly and keen to recommend activities in Asunción and give advice on further travel in Paraguay. Asunción is a very quiet city, especially midweek, so evening entertainment and even places to eat can be lacking, which is when you will truly come to appreciate this hostel's sociable garden area and kitchen.

5   One of the best! I am very pleased with this hostel. Very special thanks to the host Alexandro (Alejandro). He has to be rewarded by his employer for his remarkable work. Hostel is close to everything. I recommend this hostel to everybody. Change US dollars here with the rate 6.8 pesos for 1 US dollar.  , age 47, Russian ()
