I worked for two summer holidays at Borgwedel (1963/64) when I was a teenager, and had two very special and memorable summers there -- basically to learn German. I was adopted as a member of the family -- it was run by Herr und Frau Ritter and they had six children if I remember rightly -- they called me nummer sieben! I remember so well sitting by the Schlei sipping Dortmunder Union Bier, and going swimming at midnight. I was very fond of the Ritter family. Sometimes we would go into Schleswig and if we had had one schnapps too many, we would drive back on the Scnapps Strasse as Herr Ritter called it. I know Herr Ritter died many years ago -- the family wrote to me when I lived in Canada. I often think of Borgwedel to this day and still have my old diary from those summers and old photos of the Jugendherberge. It would be wonderful to think I had not lost touch with a place that meant so much to me and is still, all these years later, very much in my memories.
